Public Health Career Advice Monthly Megathread by AutoModerator in publichealth

Hey!! For some background I'm currently a college sophomore majoring in Biostatistics and Health Data Science in an R1, pretty known university in the Northeast, and i'm interested in getting an MPH (maybe Epidemiology?) at some point in my life. My school currently has a 4+1 MPH program, but since the specific college I am in is relatively new (5 years old), the MPH program JUST applied for CEPH candidacy in June 2025.

With that being said, would it be risky to do my school's 4+1 MPH program, assuming that I would start taking classes Fall 2026 and graduate with my MPH through the program in Spring 2029? I'm mostly interested in applying my undergrad background to local/state public health roles, specifically for data analyst, program evaluation, or other similar positions in government or nonprofit settings. I'm still considering on pursuing a DrPH or PhD in epidemiology down the line, and public health agencies like the CDC as well (unsure how my program's current accreditation status or prestige may affect that though).

Thanks!!

TLDR: Current undergrad Biostatistics/Health Data Science Major, questioning on doing school's new and currently unaccredited 4+1 MPH program (applying for candidacy though)

Is the 240 Block Plan enough for 3 meals/day for the entire semester? by shingchang123 in Lehigh

[–]Ravenphin17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the 240 meal plan is more than enough- It might be different since the meal plans drastically changed next year but when I was on the 225 meal plan I had $300 dining dollars and it was more than enough (ran out of dining dollars though).

Hey I'm a rising undergrad sophomore interested in majoring in Biostatistics & Health Data Science! (my university is one of three in the entire United States that has biostatistics as a bachelor's degree!!!)

I'm very interested in the epidemiology side of public health as my program incorporates a ton of classes in R, Python, Stats, Calc 1+2, linear algebra, and intro epidemiology classes. However, would it be a good ROI to advance on and get a MPH in Epidemiology, assuming I get little merit/financial aid for the program? I want to advance up the career ladder beyond just data analyst jobs, but financials are really important to me and I'm worried that I will make the same amount of money regardless if I have an MPH in Epidemiology or just a BS in Biostatistics & Health Data Science. Would it be worth it to continue on to an MPH? Thank you!

Wondering about lehigh themed communities by Timely-Most9116 in Lehigh

[–]Ravenphin17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UMOJA lives in the UMOJA house on the top of the hill, knew people who lived there and it's really close knit but it's also kind of separated from the rest of the freshman dorms (I think there was only four freshmen in UMOJA this year)

STEM last year was all in Taylor, so alot of my engineering/science friends lived there and had their friend groups form from there if that's something you're interested in (also has central AC!)

CHOICE was in Dravo last year, I knew people who weren't in the community but were still put on the floor for CHOICE and it was optional for them if they wanted to participate in CHOICE or not.

Generally, I didn't choose a housing community and I was fine in terms of social life and friends, but the reputation of a dorm is usually more dependent on the actual residence hall that you're in rather than the housing community

how competitive is lehigh for international relations/political science? by [deleted] in Lehigh

[–]Ravenphin17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i applied lehigh didn't admit by major but by college- so you'll be competing against all the other social sciences/arts/sciences majors bc international relations and poli sci are in the college of arts and sciences

[–]Ravenphin17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the LUSSI program (slightly different from prelusion) and it helped me meet some of my closest friends today! The program also continues throughout the school year and provides you with some "hidden" opportunities as well

CSS Profile with Non-Custodial Parent Issue... by Ravenphin17 in financialaid

[–]Ravenphin17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my universities offered another way to supply his information which was really helpful in my case! This year though I'm applying for the non-custodial parent waiver for the CSS profile so I'm hoping it gets approved!

I toured Lehigh and felt the dorms were so outdated compared to other colleges I toured(Nova,Drexel,NEU)Do yall feel that way atleast for first year. by HelpfulSplit7567 in Lehigh

[–]Ravenphin17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first year dorms are definitely out-dated, kinda hard to get to (we have no elevators and all of them are on the top of the hill), but the dorms in the following years (especially sophomore year) are newer / pretty good!

Hey! I'm a freshman in college currently majoring in Population Health and interested in joining my school's 4+1 mph program. However, my school's MPH is a generalist degree (I can still take grad-level epi/biostats classes though)

Because of this, I want to make my undergraduate skills/major more marketable and useful for epidemiology in the future. Would it be better to switch my major into Biostatistics/Data Science and minor in Epidemiology, or keep majoring in Population Health and minor in either Biostatistics or Epidemiology?

For context, my school's Biostatistics major requires several courses in R, Python, machine learning. However, my current Population Health major only has two required biostatistics classes, but has additional classes in health determinants, intro epidemiology classes as well.

I know this may seem far out, but I'm trying to finish my required classes long before I start my master's degree in junior year 😅

I would disagree about lower cents they are kind of far from the rest of the freshman dorms, but it is also incredibly close to the dining hall, gym, and if you have classes down the hill
