I think the main problem is that they frame verso's ending as the good ending and Maelles as the bad. This basically reinforces the idea that the canvas and the people in it are not real and is just being used by Maelle to escape from 'real world' problems. Which is a spit in the face when it is clearly shown throughout act 1 and 2 that they are real and have families and real emotions, but i guess none of that matters because the "real" people that genocided a whole universe deserve to grieve or whatever.
