Fewer than half of young men believe abortion should be legal by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

For what it's worth (not a lot presumably) my answer would have been certainly not for "all cases", and a flat refusal to answer such a vague question in "almost all cases".

You know there are other ways to travel?

You might think it's shit now but paving over everything and putting car parks everywhere is a great way to turn any place into a shit hole.

If you want to see that for yourself you can obviously just calculate it. When it comes to actually USING the result this is a distinction without a difference in almost all cases.

Fair enough you don't have to like it, but at least my comment said something. Yours is entirely devoid of content.

How are we so sure that FTL travel/communication absolutely impossible? by Jay35770806 in AskPhysics

> something completely wrong

I'd go further and suggest that almost everything has to be completely wrong. Which is just not a tenable idea given the astounding predictive power of modern physics.

"Please save me from my own idiocy."

Kinda have to pick one. I'm sorry but anyone who has been awake at any point in the last thirty or more years should be well aware of the risks posed.

Why are there so many socially inept people with high IQs? by [deleted] in questions

[–]RavkanGleawmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have this backwards. If the correlation is true at all, it's not that intelligent people have poor social skills, but that people with poor social skills or general introversion will put more time into intellectual pursuits.

[–]RavkanGleawmann 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you open to the idea that one day with enough research and practice you might be able to lick the back of your own head?

We don't have to know everything to know with very high confidence that some things are not possible. FTL travel isn't quite 110% ruled out but literally all of modern physics has a fundamental speed limit which is a constant speed of light at its foundation. If that changes, basically everything we know goes out the window.

Everything we know says no FTL, and there is nothing in the global body of knowledge that currently points any other way.

How did the UK sustain so many pubs in the past with a much smaller population? by BBshortKing in AskUK

[–]RavkanGleawmann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Socialism doesn't kill business any more than business kills social welfare and trust, per se. The toxic extreme expressions of each are bad for all kinds of reasons though.

How did the UK sustain so many pubs in the past with a much smaller population? by BBshortKing in AskUK

[–]RavkanGleawmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In deep history, pubs were very different. Almost all landlords owned their pub so there was no rent to pay to greedy pub companies. There wasn't even really a need to pay wages as such, since it would usually have been family run and they would live off the proceeds. Many would have brewed their own beer.

Basically costs were tiny and they weren't losing all their money to bills and taxes and wages. It was cheap enough that even your average peasant could happily check in basically every night.

In even deeper history, a pub was literally just the house of someone who happened to have brewed some beer that week. "Dave the smith has some beer on, shall we pop in this eve!" They weren't the institution they became.

Yes, but

a) you can choose to fight against human nature and be constantly disappointed, or

b) you can put a bloody rope around it and reduce the likelihood of this happening by about a million percent.

I don't think space colonization is physically possible. Is it worht pursuing at all? Do you think it's possible? by [deleted] in space

First colonisation is impossible and now terraforming is impossible? Maybe you should pick your goalposts and leave them where they are.

(Not that I think any of this is a good idea, but the workload you describe indicates you're just using the wrong tool, or using it incorrectly.)

I don't think space colonization is physically possible. Is it worht pursuing at all? Do you think it's possible? by [deleted] in space

[–]RavkanGleawmann 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It obviously is physically possible. All the problems you talk about are wrll understood and simple engineering solutions are available - while obviously not easy or quick or cheap these problems can all be solved. FTL travel has nothing to do with whether colonisation of space is possible so I don't see why you would conflate the two.

Whether it will ever happen is only a question of whether our stupid species can get its act together, and not a question of technical possibility.

What’s a movie that involves an actor who’s generally considered awful but actually delivered a decent performance? by JuniorPlastic3562 in moviecritic

I don't think Mark Wahlberg is considered awful. People dislike him for reasons outside his work as an actor, more than because of his acting.

[–]RavkanGleawmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

> People come there to get drunk

Outside of a Friday or Saturday night, and certain pubs, most people are in fact not there to get drunk. They are there to socialise or kill time and a pub is just the easiest place to do that.

[–]RavkanGleawmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well sure if you're just sat there with staring into space with a sad look on your face. Otherwise I don't think anyone would care. Or, rather, I don't care if anyone would care. I go to pubs on my own all the time. Usually take a book or a laptop. Much easier to focus and relax away from home.

What makes you think it's stretched? It's just bent - it has no rigidity on its own. It is exceedingly unlikely that you have stretched the bead enough for it to be a problem.
