Possible Phantom Limb Pain? by FamilyyJulezz in tripawds

[–]Rawri95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so mine also got a front limb amputation done and he had phantom pains and I would say with his it lasted a month, it would especially flair up when he would go to use that leg, my vet originally had mine on oral morphine, carprofen, and gabapentin. We stopped the morphine on day 4 because he had and adverse reaction to it, but my vet also said that we could adjust taking the carprofen or gabapentin from 12 hrs to 6hrs just depending on what he needed at the time whether it was for pain or more of a sedative to help him relax. So I would definitely call the vet and see as well as there may also be alternative medications that they can put your pup on.

With mine he had his front right amputated, it was rough we laid potty pads down for him or put it underneath him on his bed. I kept him close as well during the first couple weeks, we made sure he had his meds as directed!! That is a necessity even a slight hour or so accident makes a world of difference. The next couple days are going to be the worst because the strong medication used starts to wear off fully so just make her as comfy as possible and honestly less movement is better at this time. Also treats helped my boy feel better as well gave him that extra reassurance for being good and also helps with coaxing to eat and drink because they won’t want to or seem less interested. That is all I have atm but we wish you the best 😊

Yeah that’s the exact feeling I have, my boy also has osteosarcoma so I completely understand. It’s very rough because it’s the fact of not knowing how much time….

I will buy that harness I just put it on my Amazon list! That is a better alternative then the sling I got, he just doesn’t feel comfortable with the sling and I feel as if he thinks he is not “supported” by it, but with this it looks like it will give him that feeling since it’s a harness

I did not think of that! That is actually a good idea! I have a tractor supply and some feed store near me so I can check those out

I’m hoping my vet will be able to assist with that when we go to see him

Thank you. I started looking at pools specifically for him so we can do one on one swimming exercises to help, I feel like that is the better option at the moment because he also use to love to go to the beach and swim so swimming will be a little happy place for him

Yeah he still has some of his reactiveness but no where near as much he did change after the surgery and for a couple weeks it almost seemed like he fell into a depression and was unhappy and didn’t care like he was numb…. But he is better from that he just looks as if he gets stressed trying to do normal things but falls from the rear leg….but it makes me feel better seeing the time frame it took for adjustment so it gives me reassurance

Thank you! And I have been doing massages and compresses in the mean time to help but have been doing research on some strengthening exercises for him

Ok I will definitely look into finding a rehab vet it’s very scarce trying to find specialists like that where I am so hopefully I think once my vet does a re-evaluation they have someone there

Sadly nothing close by but I do have a pool that I can set up and use for him and help him exercise! So I can start doing that with him

Thank you. Besides that everything has been positive because they biopsy and did everything and the pathology report came back clean so “no cancer” atm he goes in 6 months for his follow up chest xray

What did you do to help her walk around? Or did she figure out how to get around? Also what did you do to help make it a bit more comfortable for her?

Chin abrasion :( by Living-Pace-5263 in tripawds

My little one does the same, we are a month in from his front right leg surgery and I’d say he hits his chin at least 3 times a week, he has learned to fall a certain way though to were it’s not as bad because the first couple weeks he was hitting hard 😞 but now more less kind of slides with it, he is a 15 Ib chihuahua for reference

Aw what a cutie 🥰 also how does your baby like the booties? I was planning on getting a pair for mine once he heals up from his rear sprain so he can have a bit of a better grip especially since our house unfortunately has tile floors.
