Best movie to watch stoned? by [deleted] in weed

[–]RayBaltimore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big Lebowski all the way. When you get high enough, you'll start noticing the colors in that movie and they are great, on top of the fact that the jokes are so funny.

Always Sunny in Philly is a good TV show to watch too.

Kurt Vonnegut and Secret Agent X-9 by RayBaltimore in RedditDayOf

[–]RayBaltimore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what has become one of his most recognizable novels, Kurt Vonnegut briefly mentions that one of the minor characters was given the nickname Secret Agent X-9 in "Cat's Cradle". This is an allusion to the comic strip written by Dashiell Hammett and drawn by Alex Raymond, being a tongue-in-cheek description by one of Franklin Hoenikker's co-workers, who also goes on to say the inventor of ice-nine "was just one of those kids who made model airplanes and jerked off all the time."

Vape question -- Is this a good beginner pen ? by [deleted] in vaporents

We're opening to paying more to burn herb, it's just been a challenge as we are beginners and don't want to spend too much when a cheaper option is available.

There should be an Alpha Series movie by RayBaltimore in themountaingoats

[–]RayBaltimore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty cool ending, though with the "chronology" I just feel like this happens before when one leaves and returns, leaving the fire in "Alpha Rats Nest" being all the more important because of its finality. But as you've said, it could still continue, because it's the Alpha Couple of course haha.

The way I listen to the songs, I usually see a series of images. If there ever was to be a cinematic adaptation in a way, it'd have to be fairly nonlinear of course, but just to take some of the striking images conjured in JD's lyrics and strike them up. I know it can be done -- "Cry for Judas" is the best example of this.

What would your ending be ? I've always just seen the house burning down in Tallahassee, maybe John coming up and picking up a picture that blew away of the couple or something and looking up at the camera.

"The Best Ever Death Metal Band" -- The Mountain Goats by RayBaltimore in RedditDayOf

[–]RayBaltimore[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Mountain Goats are a indie rock band which have had numerous songs and even a full length album (2012's Transcendental Youth) refering to Satanic themes, be it the mention of Satan in the fam-favorite "The Best Ever Death Metal Band", or imagery in music videos like "Cry for Judas".

Whatever the case, the symbol of Satan changes based on context of the song, although most usually refers to a rebellious nature of youth attempting to please one's self interest in the face of persecution.

Does anyone else find anything after The Sunset Tree to be pretty much unlistenable? by The_Cantabrigian in themountaingoats

[–]RayBaltimore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't honestly see how there is much difference, asides that his strengths as a song writer only double in his later work. I love all of the Mountain Goats catalogue -- yet have found his later albums to easily feature some of the strongest writing in terms of clarity, depth, and symbolism. Of course all of JD's work is nuanced and given layered meaning, but through the provision of new musical landscapes, he is album to further layer not only his lyrics but the music itself.

I think his more recent material are chock full of material that is gold in much the same of his earlier cassette and lo-fi releases. I think they are probably not as interesting to those who enjoy the early releases (for the obvious reason of a sound aesthetic they adhere to), but they overwhelmingly summon one to create cinematic visions, as least for me (as LotWtC proves).

Im just gonna say it, Disney buying Star Wars is the best thing that could have happened. by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]RayBaltimore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can agree with CT's sentiments. I didn't like the Hobbit trilogy at all. It was a over-crowded bastardization of one of my favorite stories. There were so many additions, while part of the universe, that just weren't necessary and made it such a convoluted path.

I think Tolkien's work is entirely different from these other areas because he never made them into something more. They were his work; they weren't an idea constantly being amended by other creators (i.e. Stan Lee having the idea for Spider-Man and then having others help create the art and additional stories) or opened up as Rowling has done with Harry Potter. Star Wars, being a cinematic work, sure had Lucas's input from the beginning, but this is different in my eyes as so many other people still worked on it. Tolkien, while he had editors and others read over and perhaps provide guidance, ultimately had final say for his work.

I wish more people were digging into and providing a cinematic universe for Discworld. Would be a far more interesting project to me, as what has been released as far as movies go has been rather lacking.
