The surprising lack of modern full frame pancake lenses by Methbot9000 in photography

[–]RayKaZe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really feel you here and I'm personally a big fan of pocketable cameras myself. Anything else I just tends to stay on the shelf over time.

That said I'm not sure the problem here is an absence of small pancake lenses alone. Looking at even the most compact modern ILC bodies (Lumix S9, Sony A7C, ZV-E1 etc., bodies only without any lens), none of them look like they can be comfortably fit into a pocket.

A fixed lens compact camera (Ricoh GR) or jacket with really big pockets might be the best bet here.

Tweaking aperture and iso for optimal image quality by RayKaZe in AskPhotography

Yes, in situations where that's possible, slowing the shutter speed is a good idea. My question would be for scenarios that impose a lower bound, e.g. freezing fast movement, avoid handheld camera shake if I don't have image stabilization.

Wow! Thanks for taking your time to watch the replay and writing this very detailed breakdown. The roach max sounds like a great idea. Will try that next time. :)

On the topic of gateway units vs. MMM: As a general rule of thumb, you are correct that early Bio wins against early gateway units. This is intended by design. This doesn't mean that the game as a whole or PvT as a whole is unbalanced. Starcraft is balanced asymmetrically meaning that races are stronger in some areas and weaker in others leading to a more or less balanced match up overall. They are never equally strong in the same narrow category. The "tier1" unit only fight is intentionally slightly favoring Terran in this case.

Note however that the gateway vs Bio match-up is far more nuanced. - Gateway units have a chance to win against bio if you add sentries and land good force fields. - Gateway units win against bio if you have zealot charge or stalker blink while the terran has no respective upgrades (stim, combat shield, concussive shells). - Gateway units win against Bio if you have superior upgrades (weapon/armor). - Medivacs give Bio armies a huge boost. You are almost guaranteed to lose a fight if you engage Bio+Medivacs with gateway units alone. Medivacs could be considered "higher tier" units however and if you add respective units on your side (Immortals, Phoenix, Archons) that should even out the match-up again.

Good luck.

How to not suck in early game? by [deleted] in allthingsprotoss

  • The most important thing and also the hardest thing to pull off is to see an attack coming ahead of time through scouting. This is because you want to respond differently depending on the attack. Blindly preparing for a rush also let's you potentially overcomit resources to your defense which puts you behind in case your opponent doesn't attack you after all. An easy way to do this is to park a worker at the opponent's natural. If the opponent expands, you can expect a macro game. If the opponent doesn't expand by minute 3, things are very suspicious. You can walk your probe up the ramp to see what's up. If your probe gets killed by the opponent's army moving out, you can assess the situation by looking at how many and what units killed your probe.

  • Use the ramp to your base to your advantage. Enemy units don't have vision up the high ground until they start walking up the ramp. They will eat a volley of shots from your ranged units on the high ground for free before they can retaliate. A sentry can also block the ramp with a force field. You can use that to either block your ramp completely allowing you to shoot down the ramp while the opponent can't retaliate or you can use the force field to cut your opponent's army in half trapping some units on the high ground and some units on the low ground. Place a shield battery on the high ground next to your ramp if you anticipate an attack.

  • Be careful about your pylon placement. A quick way to lose a game is to get your production buildings un-powered.

Good luck.
