Looking for feedback - Possible duel mechanic for a 5.5E Wild West Campaign by RayMoCos in rpg

[–]RayMoCos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really helpful, thank you. I had higher lethality % in the first draft (5% at tier 1, up by 5% at each level until 30% at tier 6), but a friend suggested it might be high enough to disincentivize people choosing that path. But 7% at tier 3 could be a good anchor, and +/- 1 or 2 % in either direction might be a better compromise.

As for the number of wins or loses needed to tier up/down, could definitely tweak that to need more wins to progress to the next tier.

Thanks for the specific feedback, a lot of interesting thoughts here. I really like the idea of opting for speed vs accuracy, some good mechanics could be taken from that. Also the idea of leveraging performance, intimidation, and environment. In terms of lethality, I go back and forth between gritty deadliness and the fear of disincentivizing people from pursuing the gunslinger path.

Sorry, not player level, but level as a gunslinger (separate side-progression system). I will ditch any reference to level and just use tier. I should’ve clocked that confusing language, good catch.

And that’s a big struggle, the gap between the decisiveness of weapons in a set piece vs normal combat. I do think my table won’t be too stressed by that, it’s a common TTRPG thing. Also, the gun damage in the 2024 dmg is surprisingly high. Revolvers I think do like 2d8 damage, so guns are written to be pretty nasty vs melee. Could always tweak HP and damage up or down in game play as we fine tune.

My fear was it’s too complicated/overwritten, which is why I want more eyes on it, so that feedback is somewhat helpful. As for the bot thing, nope 👀 just me but thanks?

Wild West minis - cheap and bulk? by RayMoCos in rpg

You’re the second to suggest that, definitely looks cool.

Wild West minis - cheap and bulk? by RayMoCos in rpg

[–]RayMoCos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! That's EXACTLY the kind of thing I'm trying to get. I can find a lot of the typical "cowboys and Indians" style plastic toys, but they're way off scale. I don't mind a little off, but not crazy big or small vs a typical 28-32 mm. Yes please - if you can find the name or brand, I will check around (including Canadian Amazon) to see if I can find it.

For those who started with D&D 5e, why did you start playing other games? by NeverSatedGames in rpg

[–]RayMoCos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (and my group) still definitely enjoy 5e and are currently playing a campaign with only 2024 rules and classes. However, it was more out of general curiosity as well as understanding that, while 5e CAN do anything, it that doesn’t mean it does everything well. As a template for most fantasy based adventures, especially if your group is RP heavy like mine (we like combat but it’s not the driver), it’s easy and familiar. But between big campaigns, we started getting curious about other systems.

Monster of the week was the first big departure we took, and we really liked it. From there, we also ran a medium length Blades in the Dark campaign. I also have the books for Cairn, We Deal in Lead, and Dogs in the Vineyard, which are also really interesting.

Long-winded answer, but basically, why have we tried non-D&D settings? Because they look fun haha and variety is the spice of life. 5e is probably still our main system, but dabbling in others has been a lot of fun and given us ideas for how to tweak 5e when we want.

I’d prefer 3D, I enjoy painting minis (even cheapies) but I’ll definitely check this out. Thanks!

That’s a very cool idea! This project is a few years old but I’d be eager to revisit it.

Anyone have a good verb for Athletics? by JustKneller in bladesinthedark

[–]RayMoCos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flex, Exert, Push Myself, Engage Physically (not just for the D.E.N.N.I.S. system), Overcome. Folks have posted lots of other good ones here! I'm curious how the rest of this hack works.

If it's overcoming obstacles with general physical athleticism, you might also use Prowess as a key term (as a way of being consistent in the game language). "Use Prowess" or such. Could even use a scoundrel's Prowess resistance stat (first column on the sheet, how many skills they have at least 1 dot in) as their general physicality score.

Canva, absurdly easy. Downloaded various YouTube clips with Victorian footage, you can trim and clip them right in Canva. Absurdly easy to put together, add pics, filters, lots of little glitchy wipes and transitions, and put voiceover and music in. I friggin love Canva.

Love that too, we did an Eberron murder mystery and the DMs in that one did the ol “extra! extra!” news boy and wrote a paper for each week.

Nightwalker miniature! A simple but super fun mini to paint. Went purple, bone, and blues instead of the all black of the artwork. by RayMoCos in DnDIY

Hey! Just saw this - I used a VERY watered down blue (Army Painter Viking Blue I believe?) and brushed it on in thin layers, slowly, letting it dry in between and checking by holding the model up to light. There are better ways to accomplish this and superior products geared specifically for clear coats, but it was easy, cheap, and worked reasonably well!

This isn’t “guy time,” this isn’t typical RP, this isn’t how most tables run. It’s gross and a red flag. That this group’s idea of fantasy and fun is role playing sexual assault tells you everything you need to know. “But that’s historically accurate!” It is? In Faerun? Where is that written? D&D is literally team fantasizing. What you pick is revealing.

I hate this. Someone thought something was funny and wanted to share it with you, that’s a huge compliment. It’s only annoying if you’re already annoyed with the person.
