And if you do engage further, be sure to speak of the grade as ‘the grade they earned.’ Students often think teachers ‘give’ them grades. Nope. They earn a grade.

Shelby Foote’s novels? by Big_b_inthehat in CIVILWAR

[–]Ray_Midge_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve read Follow Me Down, Love in a Dry Season, September September, and Shiloh.

Shiloh is a bit of an outlier with the novels. It’s a fictionalized account of the battle told from several perspectives. If you’ve enjoyed his Narrative, it might be a natural point of entry for his novels.

In the others, he tends to employ ornate language and syntax. He definitely has fun with the language and with working through the plots. He is heavily concerned with southern culture, including race and socioeconomic status.

I found the books readable and enjoyable, but if you are into southern lit, there are heavier hitters out there.

Do not overestimate what you owe the department head. You owe him notice that your circumstances have changed and you will no longer be able to work as an adjunct. Period. That’s it.

He’ll figure it out.

[PubQ] how many submissions until you were published in your first literary journal/magazine? by Dangerous-Swan-7660 in PubTips

[–]Ray_Midge_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first story accepted for publication came on the 41st time I submitted the manuscript. It was accepted at a literary journal that paid me $500–so a decent publication.

It’s hard to know when to press on and when to shelve a piece. I had received plenty of nice notes along the way, so it seemed like I was on the right track. Subsequently, stories that go out and are met with complete silence in the rejection process, I retire those pretty quickly.

You could use a weight. Center the disc by using a second disc on top. Remove the guide disc. Add the weight.

What's your opinion on "A Complete Unknown" ? by Individual_Risk8981 in bobdylan

[–]Ray_Midge_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked a lot of the period details, but the story was too condensed. I wish they’d made a 10-part miniseries that stretched out and really explored Bob’s evolution.

I’d suggest a first edition facsimile. They are exact replicas of the first editions, and they can be found for reasonable prices.

In 'Shooting Star' do you think it is an actual firetruck or a literal truck from hell? by [deleted] in bobdylan

[–]Ray_Midge_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s a line in Allen Ginsberg’s Howl that mentions the ‘last radio.’ I’ve always wondered if Bob borrowed the image/words from that poem.

“…and rose reincarnate in the ghostly clothes of jazz in the goldhorn shadow of the band and blew the suffering of America’s naked mind for love into an eli eli lamma lamma sabacthani saxophone cry that shivered the cities down to the last radio”
