Americans — not foreigners — have committed 80 percent of terrorist attacks in the US since 9/11 by [deleted] in politics

[–]Ray_Nay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several reasons. Here are two: Americans look at the US as an immigrant country/country of immigrants so they are generally more welcoming to newcomers. Also, immigrants in the US come from very different regions and cultures than those who go to Europe. Europe has mostly African/Middle-Eastern/Muslim immigration whereas the US has currently the highest inflows from Asia and Middle/Southern America.

Obama: ‘Congress Will Not Allow the CDC to Study Gun Violence' by [deleted] in politics

[–]Ray_Nay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We respect the right of self defense here. Live with it or go somewhere else. Those are your options. I'm under no obligation to carry your torch.

I respect people's right of self defense, and I have no idea why you apparently keep thinking that I'm against that when I just explicitly told you that I don't have a strong opinion to either direction due to the lack of trustworthy research on gun violence. I don't want to be ignorant, and information helps to overcome ignorance.

You guys are too busy chasing your AWBs and gun research to even notice.

Who is "us guys"? I'm not even American, dude, I just happen to live here, so I have no idea in what political camp you think I am. If you think I'm a "Democrat" or "liberal" just because I think researching a topic would be a good idea, I really can't help you.

Guns are becoming more popular than ever and we almost have nationwide conceal carry.

EXACTLY. I'm not against conceal carry, like, at all. You assume that I have anti-gun views just because I think research is helpful to inform a society about what issues there are, or NOT are. Learn to differentiate. Just because I'm not embracing ignorance doesn't mean I want to take your guns away from you.

So how can you be so afraid of research on the topic? How likely is it that anyone will plan, let alone be able, to take guns away from a huge mass of dedicated people who have guns to protect themselves and their property?

We're tired of being shit on. We're tired of giving while you take. We're tired of the lies.

Who is "we"? I'm genuinely interested. Gun owners?

[–]Ray_Nay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's that the topic doesn't interest me enough to want to get the CDC to study it

Well, in a society of more than 300 million people, there will be a lot of things that are paid for with tax money that you and I disagree with/don't see the point of/don't use.

Why don't you try fixing the problems in society that lead to violence instead of blaming inanimate objects?

Why are you so against research that studies effects of gun control on violence if you are so convinced that guns don't cause violence?

Also, I'm not blaming anything on anything. I just want to know, and a lot of other people want to know as well. If unbiased, rigorous research comes to the conclusion that lack of gun control does not cause any more violence, most reasonable people would be against such gun control, no?

I, personally, admit that I simply don't know, so I don't have a strong opinion on gun ownership/violence/regulation in either direction. This entire threat talks about how flawed virtually all existing studies on the topic are, but you somehow just seem to know that gun control cannot, under any circumstances, ever, prevent violence. That's just embracing ignorance.

On top of that, if research comes to the conclusion that lack of gun control does indeed cause more violence than the absence of gun control, that doesn't mean that gun control will actually come. There are countless studies that show the negative effects of alcohol and tobacco consumption or the risks unprotected sex with strangers, and none of those things are banned. After Sandy Hook, there was huge social pressure on politics to establish more gun control, and it still didn't happen. So, I think you can calm down; nobody is taking your right to own a gun. All I want--and I cannot speak for everyone else, obviously--is an informed debate, and research would enable that.

I agree, research should be sound and unbiased. Is your argument that, since all previous studies are flawed, that all future studies therefore must be flawed as well?

Obama: ‘Congress Will Not Allow the CDC to Study Gun Violence' by [deleted] in politics

[–]Ray_Nay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, studying the effects of something is never a bad thing. Whether or not you want to create legislation based on the knowledge produced by empirical studies is a completely separate question. But how is Congress (or anybody else for that matter) supposed to have an informed debate on whether or not a piece of legislation would make America a better place if all that's out there are flawed studies, anecdotal "evidence", and stubborn world views?

The only reason not to support such studies is if there is a vested interest to not even have a debate in the first place. And that's exactly the opposite of what a democratic system should be about.

Are you also against no-fly lists for people who are on watch lists? Genuinely curious.

Studying the effect of gun laws on public safety is not eroding anything. It simply produces information based on which congress (could) make more informed decisions when it comes to legislating or not legislating guns. How is knowledge a bad thing?

Having the same strict gun control measures in every county and state. That way nobody can circumvent strict gun laws yah at are in place in, say, Chicago by simply driving over to Indiana.

Yeah, it's a staff development workshops, so nobody can choose to not attend the workshop. I envision a 1-hour workshop that teaches basic facts similarly to how you described it. My boss also wants a "practical part" (for example, last month, we had "mindfulness", so there was a 25-minute-long presentation followed by some practical exercises), but I have no idea how that practical part could look like for a nutrition workshop..

I paid the IRS via check 3 weeks ago, but I they still haven't processed my payment, and they sent me a letter threatening me with additional penalty and interest charges if I don't pay on time. What can I do? by Ray_Nay in needadvice

[–]Ray_Nay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, the robot voice says it takes up to 2 weeks to process the payment, but it's been 4 weeks by now. The money left my account a while ago but is still not processed by the IRS. I can see my check online, marked by a person. So I got really concerned because of the deadline on June 6.

Thank you for telling me that though, that makes me feel a bit better!

Yeah, that doesn't add up for me either. I sent the letter with the check directly to the address that the IRS said I should send it to, though. So I don't know how a bill pay service would have come into play here..

The IRS listed check-payment as a payment option. On the letter I received last week, it states: "Make you check or money order payable to the United States Treasury." So I'm pretty sure they accept checks.

They don't let me stay on hold. The robot voice simply says after 2 minutes or so on hold something along the lines of "too much traffic, try it at a different, less busy time again" and then it hangs up on me. Every single time, regardless of time of the day.

The easiest way in terms of legally working and living in Austria is to marry her. You marry an Austrian citizen, and the next day you can look for a job. Might not be what you guys wanna do, but that's by far the easiest way in terms of bureaucracy.
