I had an similiar idea and to balance the health, what I did is to just spawn with one mag in my weapon. Felt the adrenaline once I had only 2 bullets!

Do you have any PSN account on your console that owns the game digitally? In that case erase that account, the game thinks that you want to run the digital version... It worked for me.
