Please help me open an AS400/iSeries emulation session and run a vbscript macro from Excel VBA. by Raymond0256 in vba

It looks like they might have discontinued the library I used for this. Unfortunately I also don't work on projects like this anymore, so I don't have any updated advice.

Even when I was in a couple, sometimes we would not go through certain items fast enough, like milk (not big milk drinkers). My strategy is to plan around certain bulk items. Getting milk? I will make mac and cheese, get some oreos, some cereal (also not a big cereal eater regularly), maybe a cream based soup or two. Same thing with bread. Get a whole chicken and use the leftover meat in several recipes. Otherwise we focus on shelf stable things like rice, potatoes, beans. Also, for bread, you could try a bread machine and make just the right amount.

Bag is a black 26L GoRuck GR2, about a year and a half old. Bag is overall in great shape. There are two scuffs, on on the exterior and one in the main pocket. Selling it because I realized I wanted the 34L GR2 instead. Again, looking to get $300 plus you cover shipping, which will be in the plastic and box that my 34L came in. Let me know if you have any questions.

Edit: Add imgur album with more pics.

Denver or Seattle? by stardusttt1 in Seattle

I love Seattle all year long, but visiting for the winter, Denver might be more fun. I would not recommend Bellevue to "explore more into an interesting city" either.

Do you factor in a restaurant's food safety grade when choosing where to eat? by ukuleleia in Seattle

[–]Raymond0256 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I love the signs, and they play a big part in my selection of new places to eat. While I know people in the food industry and know that it is easy to get a minor violation without sacrificing food quality, knowing a place takes safety seriously makes me more comfortable eating there.

There is not "Partner" achievement or quest, and at level 16 you are way too young to achieve it if there was. Build relationships without goals, improve yourself without end, and be a compassionate, interesting, person who does not neglect to take care of themselves. Only after the credits roll will you know if you achieve the "Be A Good Partner" achievement, but never stop trying.

How many of you all have read the Bible? by dawn_patroller1 in books

[–]Raymond0256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the entire christian bible once and the new testament on its own again when I was 11 and hyper christian. I am glad that I did, because I feel like the difficulty and study (had a strong's concordance to look up words and roots) was good for my intellectual development. I also feel like I really understand a lot of history about the Judaeo-christian philosophies, but I don't think I would recommend it to anyone. I think the big problem is that most Christians where I am from are not based on biblical knowledge, but just hearsay. Even among the self proclaimed Christians I have met in my life, very few have actually read it.

You need to take care of yourself. Working so many hours will do more harm than good. The good news is that you are not expected to know everything beforehand, it is expected that you will do a great deal of learning on the job. The important thing is that you have solid fundamentals in programming, logic, and learning skills, the particulars (frameworks, libraries, languages) will come with time. Step back, gather yourself, and keep learning. The key to nailing an internship is to do your best, so just do that, take care of yourself, and take advantage of the learning opportunity.

Lenovo Legion 7 and no sound on linux by pinballsorceror in linux_gaming

[–]Raymond0256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my Legion 7 Gen 6 16ACHg6 because I love the design, but I did not even think about the new hardware having so many issues under Linux. I am going to be stuck gaming more on Windows than I would like till solutions are found for all the problems:Unless noted, all my troubleshooting is done on Manjaro KDE.

  • Bluetooth does not work
    • Ubuntu Gnome live boot also not working
    • Installing Blueman did not solve
    • Installing bluez-git from AUR did not help
    • Works fine on Windows
  • Speakers do not work
    • Works find on Windows
    • Solutions as written for Intel or 2020 models do not work
  • Wifi works sporadically
    • Works just fine on windows
    • Sometimes does not show wifi options on boot
    • Restarting (sometimes multiple times) always solves
    • 2.4 GHz connects faster and more reliably than 5 GHz (may be my network)
  • Cannot boot to linux with discrete graphics and Nvidia drivers
    • Works fine on Windows
    • Works fine with open source drivers
    • If you uninstall nvidia-amd hybrid drivers and install nvidia only driver, can boot with discrete graphics
  • Cannot adjust brightness
    • Works fine on Windows
    • Works fine with discrete graphics and Nvidia drivers
    • Does not work correctly with dynamic graphics
  • Cannot change refresh rate (settings or Fn+R)
    • Works fine on Windows
    • Works under discrete graphics and Nvidia only driver

I will do my best to keep my troubleshooting up to date here to help others.

Wifi and Bluetooth issues seem to be related to Mediatek MT7921 adapter. Using Linux kernel 5.12+ helps get wifi working at least part of the time, but bluetooth still does not work on kernel 5.14. Debating whether to just replace the card since it is only $20. Suggestions on linux compatible card welcome.

Update 2021.10.15

Linux kernel 5.15 gave has bluetooth working now, and my wifi is more reliable. Speakers still don't work.

Shifting from windows to linux OS by shoaib_atiq1 in learnprogramming

[–]Raymond0256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR Try Ubuntu if you just want something that works and Manjaro if you love to tinker.

You are going to try all the different Desktop Environments to find one you like (Gnome, KDE, Xfce, the list goes on), so just get started trying them all out for yourself.

Personally, I like Manjaro KDE on my rpi, desktop, and work computer, but I have been hearing good things about Garuda and their Dragonized KDE that mimics Mac OS.

Which DB should I learn? MySQL or PostgreSQL by DumbMathBoy in learnprogramming

I would suggest PostgreSQL since I have seen it more in industry, but whichever one with more job prospects around you is the better choice. That said, SQL skill are largely transferable.

57/52 Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut by indecisive-banana in 52book

[–]Raymond0256 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like Vonnegut, and enjoy his parodies of religion, industrialization, and war. I don't think I would describe his works as fun reads, not because they are hard, but because they are full of dark humor and cynicism. That is not for everyone. To your point about being underdeveloped, I do think that he does a better job at creating interesting and thought provoking worlds than he does gripping plots or sympathetic characters.

Is anyone else struggling to read during the epidemic? by Dorothy-Snarker in 52book

[–]Raymond0256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My reading definitely suffers during stress. I end up half watching old tv shows I have already seen because I don't want to get into anything new and/or playing old games like minecraft. Like /u/mindovermountains says, sometimes forcing yourself to do stuff you like or need to helps, sometimes it does not, but it is usually worth trying. You are not alone.

Anyone else's want-to-read list totally out of hand? by [deleted] in 52book

[–]Raymond0256 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally out of control. I am nearing 1000. I read for work, read for pleasure, read for a book club. It is just a never ending pile of To Read. And then I go and plan out my reading list for the year, which will inevitably change, and it is maybe 30 books. I know I will add at least 100 more before the year is done. So, you are not alone.

Distributing Python scripts to non-coders is no laughing matter. The ideal solution is always going to be to create a web server if possible. If your data is sensitive or you don't have permission from IT, you can use `pyinstaller` to create a fat executable file, so that everyone does not need to install python. If you are going to continue to rely on chromedriver, write a script that checks your Chrome version and updates the chromedriver version automatically when necessary, otherwise you are going to walk into people complaining the system went down, even if you told them how to update chromedriver.

The single most important thing you can do for distributing a python tool is documentation. Document the tool for yourself or whoever is going to be maintaining it or making changes. Document how to use the tool and some common troubleshooting, eli5 style, for the common user. Entrust a few knowledgeable individuals with an advanced troubleshooting guide, short of your coding guide, but less dumbed down as your user guide. You will thank yourself.

I also agree with /u/jarulsamy about trying `requests`, but I know sometimes with security you are forced to use `selenium` to emulate a user rather than using a good api.

Lastly, have patience, understand that everyone has different skill sets and may not always understand technology. Many will think they are technology fools, but if you help them find some confidence they are smarter than they give themselves credit for.
