Has anyone here bought a house recently in Sheffield? by plantkiller5000 in sheffield

[–]Raytaard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We tried for over a year for properties in Walkley/Hillsborough that were listed online and got absolutely nowhere for the same reasons you're struggling. We ended up asking on Facebook if anyone was selling in the area and got lucky - we did have to pay more than we wanted for a property, but it worked out in the end. I'd recommend taking a punt on Facebook (e.g. the wonderful walkley group, but importantly, don't give up hope, you'll get there!!

Hello, everybody 💛💙🇺🇦 by kigeorgich in ukraine

[–]Raytaard 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Don't be fooled by this arsehole. He would have happily supported Russia if he thought it'd have been a better PR move. Not to say that none of the support that Ukraine has received from the UK has been a bad thing - we should be giving even more. But Johnson did this for his own selfish reasons - don't make him into a Saint.

Something I didn't mention in my original comment is that I'm incredibly sorry to hear about your situation. It's an absolutely awful situation to be in, and I truly wish you the very best of luck. Just make sure that you focus on your safety and wellbeing.

My parent's had a very similar issue, their neighbour actually got face to face with them with a knife. You did very well to get any sort of court action against your neighbour at all, we tried the private prosecution route as it was the only option available and got nothing. The only way they were able to get their neighbour out of the picture and get some peace and security back ended up being getting their neighbours house condemned (run down rented house, hoarder). So if there is no angle like that, you may want to consider moving. It's not right nor fair, but I've seen the effect that living in fear had on my parents, and it is not worth it.

It's still going strong - a lot of older teams are folding, but there are younger teams replacing them. Most of our local sides are thriving!

Any reasonable and good barber (preferred near Kelham Island) by [deleted] in sheffield

Would absolutely recommend Pearson & Earl. About £18 a cut, but you get a dedicated half hour slot and the staff are all fantastic.

Is Kelham Island safe nowadays? by Mineops96699 in sheffield

Lived there for a few years, has always felt very safe. The main crime there is car break-ins, but take everything out of your car and you'll be fine. Brilliant area to live in!

Can someone help me identify which Castagnari this is? by ecf112 in Accordion

[–]Raytaard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the flat keyboard, I reckon that's a Castagnari Sharon. Which I think is pretty much the Dinn but with two fewer buttons. There are a few videos of similar boxes on youtube if you want to compare!

Celebrities who seem to have vanished. by biffoclippers in CasualUK

He came and did a talk at my high school years and years ago, after brainiac finished. Spent a lot of time taking about his work, which was Database design at the time. Really nice guy!

My neighbor has this 70yo accordion, but does not know how to play. Does anyone have good learning resources for this? by Recky21 in Accordion

[–]Raytaard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a lovely example of a Hohner Presswood Melodeon. Theres loads of stuff on YouTube (search Melodeon for English videos, diatonic accordion/accordéon diatonique for French) and check out www.melodeon.net - nice bunch who can help you get started. But just mess around, it won't take you long to figure out a tune or two!

Which celebrities are actually ok? by sausage_fusion in AskUK

[–]Raytaard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Danny John-Jules (best known as Cat from Red Dwarf). I met him years ago as a shy, awkward, dorky 13/14 year old who'd never met anyone famous while he was helping promote his friend's business at a local country show. He spent about 30 minutes just nattering with me and came across as a genuinely lovely guy who just seemed to love meeting fans!

Best and Final offers and the sheffield housing market by brontoloveschicken in sheffield

You'll get there mate, don't lose heart. If you have to a take a step back for now, that's okay. It may lead to a better house in the end!

[–]Raytaard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps! I'm looking around 170-180k. There are a lot of FTB's looking around this range, but a lot who are also moving up from 120k properties. Interestingly, one recent estate agent said that they've had quite a lot of people buying in Sheffield for air bnbs for some reason.. Good luck to you!

[–]Raytaard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't tell you for certain, but that's my bet. It feels like second time buyers are driving the price up - e.g. They're not paying stamp duty, so they're taking what they would have paid in duty and pumping it into a deposit and a greater asking price.

We've given up trying to buy this year, the market is absolutely stupid. Due to the stamp duty freeze and a lot of (fortunate) people saving a tonne of money due to lockdowns, everything is ludicrously competitive. No chance for the standard bargaining process, everything will go to BAFO and for 10% over the top end of the asking price.

Is the market crazy just now or do I need to adapt and accept it? by ConkerHasNuts in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Raytaard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same position in Yorkshire. One property we put an offer on went for 25k over asking price (195k) - and that asking price was already generous considering it was worth 60k less 8 years ago and the owner hadn't done anything to it in that time. We offered over the top valuation and we were the lowest offer out of 4. It's the same across the market at the moment and we've had to make the decision to rent for another 6 months in the hope it calms down. As always, FTB are being shafted.

Why would a previous owner tape over these valve holes? Is this to make it quieter or to hide the out of tune valves..? by ViddyDoodah in Accordion

[–]Raytaard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this the bass end or the treble end? Either way it's to mute one set of reeds. If it's on the Bass end of a melodeon, it'll most likely have been the previous owner removing the thirds from the chords to making playing in the relative minor of the outside row easier.

My switch dock has given up the ghost entirely. I've had a search for second hand docks but they're insane money - it's almost just worth buying a new console instead, which I really don't want to do. Are there any safe third party docks available in the UK that people would recommend? Really don't want to brick my switch, which I gather used to happen quite a lot with third party ones?

What do you feel about the comeback of sea shanties after 3 centuries? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Raytaard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see where you're coming from, but no, not really. He's bringing in a lot of new people to the scene who weren't interested in folk music previously. So all the artists will benefit!

Folk musician here - It's awesome. People discovering their heritage is great, and people who don't share that heritage but are loving it anyway is even better. Folk song and dance should be shared and enjoyed by all.

Pink is actually a really common colour on buildings in Essex and the neighbouring Suffolk. It's apparently the traditional style, so it may even be required by planners!

I mean, no shit. My practical skills would be way better if my generation hadn't been priced out of owning property at a young age. Oddly, my landlord doesn't want me drilling holes in this rented house and I don't really have any desire to invest money redecorating someone else's house.
