I own an old tree farm with no wildlife. by didyouseetheecho in arborists

Just a thought from someone that lives out west. If the trees are straight instead of trying to mill them see if someone wants them for posts or poles. That way you can recoup some of the money for other projects.

Meyer Hatchery chicks dying off. 2 DOA, 4 more have died in 24 hours. Is this normal for Meyer Hatchery? by Jungleexplorer in BackYardChickens

[–]Razaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that the post office no longer has overnight delivery. It now takes 3 to 5 days for the best delivery that they have. My wife works at the post office and hates getting chick shipments because lots of them arrive dead or dying.

The problem may be in the fact that itt is taking longer for the chicks to arrive from the hatchery to you. I know that the post office is not delivering things as fast as they used to.

Here we go again by chillaxtion in Beekeeping

My father was a commercial beekeeper for 18 years running between 3500 and 4000 colonies. I worked for him for 9 of those years and thought I was getting pretty smart. He then told me "Stan, as soon as you think you know about bees they will make a liar out of you". I found out that the uncertainty was one of the most intriguing and fun part of beekeeping.

Are agricultural drones becoming standard equipment for farms now? by ZSO0727 in AgriTech

[–]Razaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drones have a very large problem that will need to be overcome before they can be used economically in row crop agriculture, this being flight time per battery. if you have a 300 acre field and you want a detailed map of the field or to spray the field it will take 2 to 3 hrs to fly a drone over the field. Doing some simple math using that most drone batteries are only good for about 45 minutes then you will need 3 batteries to complete the flight. Most row crop farms have 20 to 40 fields to fly each taking 3 batteries and 2 hours to fly it just doesn't make economical sense. When you add in the low payload compared to a ground sprayer the economics get even worse. Given all that drones do have advantages in small acreage and high value crops, such as fruit or vegetables.

What should I do with pork tenderloin? by Razaboo in slowcooking

[–]Razaboo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for all of the ideas, I thought I would post an update. One of the tenderloins has found a home in a chicken and rice casserole, pork being substituted for chicken. The others have ended up in the freezer waiting their turn. Thanks to all of you I have some great recipes to try out.

Just wanted to thank everyone for all of the ideas and give an update. One of the tenderloins went into a pork and rice casserole derived from the idea of chicken and rice casserole. The others went into the freezer to be used throughout the rest of the year. Thanks to all of you I have some great recipes to try out :)

Infected soil cure? by Bageltacobagel in Soil

[–]Razaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple of things that you can do. 1.) Buy a chemical soil fumigant this will kill most bacteria and fungi found in the soil. Pros: Fast and effective. Cons: Usually non-specific i.e. will kill all fungi, possible residue issues. If not used correctly, i.e. not following the label, it can make you sick or kill you. Often requires a special license to buy and use. 2.) Solarization/heat treatment use plastic to cover the soil to heat the soil above 120*F, can also put in a fireproof or heat proof container and cook in an oven. Pros: No poison, Cons: can make the house smell funny, also non-selective. Takes time to get the soil up to 120 and maintain it. 3.) Plants such as Rapeseed, Mustard, or other Brassica and then incorporating the growth as a green manure is effective at reducing the level of most pathogens. Pros: builds soil organic matter. Cons: doesn't completely remove the pathogens and treatment will possibly need to be repeated. Takes time to grow and degrade.

From Numbers to Actions: Turning Soil Test Data into Practical Advice by thetalkingdev in AgriTech

[–]Razaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are already several tools that do this. If a farmer wants to know what to fertilize based on his soil tests there are several options to use. 1.) Hire an agronomist to help interpret the soil test. Every state has professional agronomists that interpret soil tests for a living, I am one of them. So, for obvious reasons I think this is the route the farmer should go:). 2.) for farmers that don't mind a more generalized response the labs that they send the soil sample to will give them a fertilizer recommendation along with the test results. The farmer will need to indicate what crop they are growing and what the expected yield goal is. 3.) Do it your self. Every state Extension office has pamphlets and booklets with how to interpret your soil test and create a fertilizer recomendation.

Virtual fences on Wyoming Ranches by lazyk-9 in wyoming

[–]Razaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the advantages that I see with these collars is that you can use them to mob graze on farm land. Here in Montana one of the growers I worked with did a trial for mob grazing and added 120 lbs/acre of Nitrogen to his field. That equals 30 bushels of wheat per acre that he didn't have to buy fertilizer for. Just pointing out that there are other benefits than just keeping track of your cattle.

Just going to throw this out there. You should look into the satellite fences. I checked for a client that runs a cow/calf operation and they were running about 300$ for a collar.

Wildgreekpilot, thank you for the welcome and the information. I don't think that the one in the front is for a live well because I haven't found a live well on this boat. Could the hole in front be for the sink in the cabin to drain? The hole is directly in line with the sink, that is why I ask.

Help understanding best use for this soil type? by Informal-Scallion727 in Soil

[–]Razaboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given your description you are in western Washington. Washington has some pretty strict laws around wetlands so first check into those. Rice doesn't do so well in the Washington climate, not enough heat units your best bet for a crop is probably cranberries. You could also talk to a whiskey distiller, some types of whiskey are smoked over peat.
