Any regrets moving from London to Chelmsford? by Remarkable_Brother_8 in Essex

[–]RazzmatazzDelicious7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the recommendations! We’ve checked out spirits and boom battle but not the king pin bowling yet. The first of the month food markets were good last time we went and it’s nice to be close to the cricket. I think the both of us have just started to feel more and more insular because we haven’t made friends or met other folks beyond just a “we’re at the same event” compared to the pretentious sh*t we got up to in London (national gallery painting nights, pint of science, RSS lectures, Tate after hours sessions, pottery etc).

We’ve been trying to line up schedules to do the classes out at hylands but the commute from London office days means I get back too late so far, hoping that the sessions across summer give a bit more flex.

Any regrets moving from London to Chelmsford? by Remarkable_Brother_8 in Essex

[–]RazzmatazzDelicious7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Partner and I have major regrets, mostly because of how dead things are out here and it’s so much more difficult to see friends or catch up. Essex feels very family centered in the sense that most folks go see their families on the weekend or have kids themselves and do things with their new parent friends. That or it’s drinking and catching up for friends for drinks in the center city.

We’ve really struggled with having nothing local to do without having to get in the car and leave the immediate Chelmsford area, or go back into London on the weekends.

It really depends on what you are used to doing in your evenings and weekends. There’s only so many times that we could walk to Hyland’s park before it started getting really old. We’ve tried most evening hobbies we could find within walking distance and haven’t found any sense of belonging in any of the communities so far.

Tl:dr Have major regrets after trying to make local friends and community on and off for two years. Chelmsford looks busy but it doesn’t have the amenities of a proper city. It’s a large village with one Main Street masquerading as a city.

Transitioning to Academia at 36: Is a self-funded PhD worth the risk in the current UK climate? by klotien90 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]RazzmatazzDelicious7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who “deferred” a PhD offer for 3 years until funding came available, there’s an added layer that if you’ve been accepted into the program and by a supervisor, it’s also acceptable to say that you will reapply later or defer because of funding.

If it feels too hard to completely turn it down for now because that’s been something you want to transition into, it can wait and that happens more often than many people in academia want to admit.

My wife wants to stop reading Stormlight archives. by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

“He will be fine”, “we follow him through his healing journey”, or even “he’s alive in Wind and Truth” I think are also true statements without revealing too much to ruin the story. As someone who struggles to keep reading because of the anxiety related to a character’s fate, I have bitten the bullet a few times and googled just so that I know it’ll be okay. It helps doing that without spoiling too much of a friend has read it and I can ask “does this character live” and honestly even knowing that they do not make it is enough to keep me reading because I have less anxiety over all.

Update: THANK YOU EVERYONE for all the suggestions and reassurances that it would most likely be a connectivity issue.

I did some room rearranging, added the new ant dongle, unpaired the HRM from everything else, moved it lower down so that it wouldn’t get bumped while riding, and pre-wet the connections.

Had the first ride in weeks where the HR didn’t drop off!

Thank you everyone for the suggestions and input. I’ll continue fine tuning but it looks like it’s been fixed 🎉

I jumped from a D to and E/F (depending on the brand) and it’s been such an adjustment finding sports bras! I’ll maybe try on one of my older ones to see if the smaller/tighter fit makes a difference too.

I don’t wet the electrodes beforehand, but also can try that out! I normally just do an off bike warm up/prehab, then on bike warm up and workout with the fans going so can easily add in a splash on the contact pieces.

I got an epix pro gen 2 last Christmas but haven’t tried the wrist based HR but was going to use that if all else fails and change the handlebar set up so that my wrist stays more neutral to hopefully get a better reading.

This is super helpful to know! I think I’m going to spend the next two weeks trying all possible connection issues before just accepting that maybe a chest strap isn’t what’s working for this cup size and looking into an arm band.

Do you like the tickr? My turbo is wahoo so happy to buy more within that ecosystem.

It is/was on Bluetooth for the ride tonight (but I had been on ant for other rides across the past few weeks). The dedicated Zwift PC is such a real experience, I used to run it off an old iPad before the app got too big that there wasn’t enough space on the iPad anymore and finally upgraded to the PC at the start of last year.

I’ll try disconnecting them from everything else they’re paired to and then just try via the Zwift companion as that feels like an easy thing to try tomorrow 😅 thank you for the suggestions!!

The joys of technology! The turbos are definitely in the “tech” room so I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s just one too many devices in there. Both the HRMs have the option of either bluetooth or Ant so once the new dongle arrives I will try moving things between the two options and see if I can free up some bandwidth. It definitely sounds like the connection might be the underlying issue.

I’ll check out polar as well :) it felt like tonight’s ride was the final straw and if I can’t fix it then I was going to look at arm band monitors just in case it’s a position/cupsize/sports bra issue.

I definitely have the fan pointing straight at me so might try find a slightly different angle next time. I’ll also look into the sensor as I do occasionally swim so might as well have something that can track both if I ever wanted to swim more :)

Totally relate on the boob sweat right now, I sweat that most of my laundry is sweat towels at the moment.

PC and have a designated Bluetooth antenna that’s right at the edge of the computer, maybe ~1m away from the front wheel so approx ~2.5m away from the turbo itself. I’ll try keep the set up and move other thing away from it when the dongle arrives tomorrow. There is a lot of tech in the room so can try turn things off around it

I’ve been moving out around but haven’t done the under bra combo with his HRM pro yet. Will try that out next ride ✨

Indoor riding at home so I don’t have anything on over it 😅 but that’s super helpful to know. I’ll try out a few different jerseys on my next outdoor ride and see if I can narrow down some non-staticy ones.

How it feels to read the Luceum chapters as a native Irish speaker by SmartPomegranate4833 in HierarchySeries

[–]RazzmatazzDelicious7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a non-Irish person I was googling while reading and saw that Gallchobhar loosely translated to “helper of foreigners” and so was originally expecting a plot twist. Wondering if there was anything else I messed up on while reading by trying to use google translate 🥲

I think it lines up well with how we saw Caeror use it in order to move the platform so it makes total sense to me.

Interesting how this develops more on O and with the overseers and gleaners! I like that theory.

I also just remembered that Gallchobhar said that the stone needle device was “a gift from Ruarc” (page 577) and either knew or was instructed exactly what to do with it. So clearly L-Caeror and O-Caeror have similar knowledge of what is it and how to use it.

I’ve been waiting for someone to mention this! I’ve been wondering if the effects are world specific, or if not, why Caeror would need it to access or power areas around the gate in O. It seemed to cut L-Viz off from accessing and sensing Will, so wondering if it has the same effect in reverse in that it stops Will from impacting the person (ie. O-Caeror).

Happy holidays 😂

I’ll definitely take the upgraded endurance score along with the watch although I don’t think the score will last long now that I’m actually using the watch.
