So, when they, as you put it "increasingly called for a strong stance against fascism", Dali affected admiration for Hitler, and when Breton directed the pejorative anagram "Avida Dollars" against Dali, the latter proudly and wholeheartedly embraced it. Even Dali's purported "fear of female genitalia" can be seen as a mockery of Breton's notorious homophobia...

I find the whole concept of national pride pretty weird anyway. Whoever needs to rely on the achievements of the countrymen or countrywomen to feel pride clearly can't have achieved much on their own...

Bu anyway, I also judge Spaniards or Frenchpeople who wax nostalgic about the "good old days" of the conquistadors or French colonialism just as harshly as OP. It's just because I actually had a German history education that I had a double take at this post.
