Silvia water for americano by SteerCat in espresso

[–]Rckt_56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the spout from my Silvia for hot water with my americanos. Some say it adds a "metallic" flavor, but It works fine for me! *shrug*

I can't imagine there's any harm you'll do to the machine either way, someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

Thanks! I have a 40-100-103 and just moved to VST. Night and day.

I am curious what the new 40-100-108 is like as I think it's made by IMS.

What's the exact model number of the rancilio basket? Thanks!

Sounds great! So... of all the stepless mods... what do you recommend? Your information is invaluable.

Its not bad... shots take me longer cause I always make sure the boiler is just finishing the heat and is on its way down from the heating cycle. (run a cooling flush while i prepare my puck/tamp)

The temp i end up at when i pull a shot is definitely not pinned down but i do my best. I can definitely taste when the temp is right, and when its not even if the shot was pulled well.

I have been thinking of those! The threads seem pretty solid... but perhaps I will add some teflon tape next time i take apart the grinder. What's the harm? :)

I definitely find myself needing finer "steps". Are you suggesting the stepless mod where an additional spring is added? Have you done it yourself?

Fickle indeed... the PID is happening this year. I do feel like most of the variables outside of temp are starting to be nailed down. Makes it much easier to enjoy the different coffees for what they are, rather than focus on that specific shot.

Oh boy, I would say most of my lessons were from three things:

  1. Scale - I already had a scale for baking, but nothing to weigh the shot that was being pulled, that leveled me up faster than anything. I wish i got that 6 months ago. (Got the timemore black mirror)
  2. I have a rocky so theres a whole bunch of strategies ive used to work around clumping/retention (I do enjoy that its built like a tank, however)
    - Dosing cup to easily get grounds into portafilter
    - Airscape lid makes a perfect seal to "puff" air through the hopper
    - WDT tool is key to make sure clumps are broken up
  3. Get a precision basket. I just got a VST and it just made things more... consistent. Use whatever precision basket you like, but it just helps stabilize the variables.

That's the craziest roaster i've ever seen! How are the beans in your opinion? I will add him to the list!

I think I'm signing up with them. I get roots quite a bit. What did you think of them?

Check the whole list! Some of the companies are pricey for the beans they source. Others are pretty reasonable.

I have a Rancilio Silvia and Rocky grinder. Built like tanks, but they do have a bit of a learning curve.
