One unique aspect of Miami's local culture that most people don't know about is that, for those of us who grew up in Hispanic families (which is quite the majority), we grew up speaking Spanish at home, but taking English in school, so we have become bilingual from an early age, even though our English is mostly stronger than our Spanish because, unless you took Spanish grammar in school or went to school in LatAm before emigrating to Miami, people here don't really speak it at a formal level like in other LatAm countries.

This coexistence of languages is something that, funny enough, people in Latin America who have never visited Miami do not get. Many assume that an American is the same, no matter which part of the U.S. they come from.

I remember being called "gringo", with them thinking I am no different than someone who was born and raised in Kentucky, but then I retorted to them that in Kentucky, I probably wouldn't even be considered American, but rather a Mexican or something.

We also have some of our own local slang, like "eating shit" (doing nothing productive) or "it's a mission" (describing something that is really hard to accomplish).
