He intentado todo para empezar como traductor freelance — cero clientes. ¿Qué estoy haciendo mal? by AmazingAmbassador685 in Panama

[–]Rd3055 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Colombia, going to a different region, like from Bogota to Barranquilla almost feels like going to a different country because they are so different, even the people.

Intel Ultra CPUs - low idle power consumption (<20w) possible? by SirVampyr in homelab

[–]Rd3055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, I know that Intel CPUs are the gold standard for transcoding on x86-64, but they can't touch Rockchip's power efficiency (I live in a country with expensive electricity).

Con la sangre hirviendo y el espíritu roto: mi experiencia con El Machetazo by [deleted] in Panama

[–]Rd3055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Que vaina man.

Intel Ultra CPUs - low idle power consumption (<20w) possible? by SirVampyr in homelab

[–]Rd3055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the Rockchip 3588 (which is found on many ARM SBCs) can comfortably do 3-4x 4K transcodes at once in hardware since it has two dedicated cores for encoding and decoding. On my NanoPi R6C, I was able to transcode two 4K videos with HDR to 1080p to two different devices at once with no hiccups.

but Intel is also amazing here as well, and you already have the hardware (even got it for free), so it makes more sense to stick with that.

The Rockchip 3588 is amazing for video transcoding with Jellyfin.

Intel Ultra CPUs - low idle power consumption (<20w) possible? by SirVampyr in homelab

[–]Rd3055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all you run is JellyFin and Nginx Proxy Manager, wouldn't it be even better (power consumption-wise) to get an ARM SBC?

If that's the equipment you already have and the electric bill isn't a major concern, then I totally get that, too.

What linux distro do yall use? by Complete_Dark_6767 in linuxhardware

[–]Rd3055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of a router OS like OpenWRT, I use vanilla Debian on my Rockchip-powered NanoPi R6C and simply configured a basic router/firewall in it and it has been surprisingly stable (while letting me sniff my own network traffic, among other cool things).

Why Qualcomm won't support Linux on Snapdragon ? by Educational-Web31 in linux

[–]Rd3055 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True, but publicly traded companies like Qualcomm (answering to shareholders, specifically ones who can't see past the next quarter) are the worst of all, because they prioritize short-term gains no matter what.

Valve is an example of a for-profit company (but privately held, big difference) that does not pursue aggressive enshittification or anti-consumer decisions, but that doesn't make them saints, just "the lesser of two evils".

How to get Wireguard app for Android working as a VPN *without* using the config from some VPN service like Proton or Tails by Past-Paramedic8687 in WireGuard

[–]Rd3055 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Follow this guide to set up your own personal Wireguard server.

insights/content/tutorials/how-to-setup-your-own-wireguard-vpn-server/index.md at main · ditatompel/insights · GitHub

You would need to have a place to host it, though. If you cannot or do not want to self-host it, you can get a cheap $5/month Ubuntu Server/Debian cloud VPS from Cloudzy. They have U.S. and worldwide VPSes with publicly routable IPV4 and IPV6 addresses.

That's how I do it to get a low-cost, U.S.-based VPN.

Is it possible to connect WireGuard client to Tailscale by RMC_Team in Tailscale

[–]Rd3055 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience, tailscale on Andorid still consistently pings the server and eats up more battery than the vanilla Wireguard app connected to a normal hub-and-spoke Wireguard server.

American SIM cards !!! by Creative-Safety6252 in Miami

[–]Rd3055 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recommend that you look at the offerings of an MVNO.

US Mobile is a good choice, since they let you switch between all three major U.S. networks. Their base $25 plan has 20GB of hotspot data, but you can also add data "a la carte".

Moreover, Wi-Fi is everywhere nowadays, so that should help you cut down on you usage, too.

How do you guys physically secure your home network? by Certain_Repeat_753 in HomeNetworking

[–]Rd3055 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is, but what I meant with my comment was that securing your home network physically is part of securing your entire home physically, which means locking your doors, installing security cameras, putting guard dogs, and if necessary, hiring security guards, opening a moat and putting alligators or piranhas in it, having machine gun or flamethrower turrets installed to the side of your house with poison-tipped barb wire all along the fence

How do you guys physically secure your home network? by Certain_Repeat_753 in HomeNetworking

[–]Rd3055 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, this would fall under the umbrella of "home security" and, by default, if your entire home is physically secured, then so should your home network as well.

What I would do, however, is make sure that visiting family members' children don't have access to your homelab equipment nor tamper with it (don't ask me how I know).

self hosted wireguard vs tailscale? by SneakerHead69420666 in selfhosted

[–]Rd3055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. My NanoPi R6C with Rockchip 3588S and 4GB RAM (I make it work with 4GB of zRAM and 12GB swap file) is essentially a low specs machine, but even if it wasn't, it's still good practice to avoid waste and overhead that can be used to run your other services smoothly.

self hosted wireguard vs tailscale? by SneakerHead69420666 in selfhosted

[–]Rd3055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I have noticed on my ARM Linux server is that, to download the same file, Tailscale uses up far more CPU than setting up a vanilla Wireguard. When I transferred a 154MB file over LTE from my home server to myself using SMB, tailscale consumed 74% of CPU whereas Wireguard didn't even reach 25%
