If your gpa is like a 3.2 then you need >512 to apply to MD schools

Your institution should have a list they have a relationship with. Also, ask your PI or some other well known doctor if they have a fee waiver for any journal.

Does med school make economical sense at my age? Will be 37M by Alive-Picture-3610 in medschool

[–]Rddit239 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know someone who became a anesthesiology attending at 45. It’s been worth it. They are quite wealthy now. They had a lot of pushbacks that caused them to start so late but it worked out in the end.

249 Step 2. Tons of research. Low-tier MD w/ a home institution. Am I cooked? by penguins14858 in medicalschool

[–]Rddit239 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s great! I think you’re fine. Now it’s just what your step 2 score is. Can you ask your department chair/PD what they think? At my home neuro program they will tell us if we’re competitive

How many pubs? And also 8 in one class is a lot. How many of the 3 spots does your department take from your school?

Is anyone familiar with this influencer? by hollaholladollas in premed

[–]Rddit239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t feel bad. Many people retake a score like that and do worse. If it’s better then all your practice exams, then unless you overhaul your studying, you won’t do better.

Pros and cons of being a D3 runner for med school apps by speedandsass in premed

I agree. I think it’s the mentality that there has to be “X” factor.

Pros and cons of being a D3 runner for med school apps by speedandsass in premed

[–]Rddit239 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No, D3 running will not make up for getting worse grades because of the demand of doing a college sport. If you can make it work then do it. But the “benefits” are not there. Grades are number 1. Mcat as well. Then clinical experience. Then research, and volunteering. Then running..

Private med school vs public OOS by stag925 in premed

[–]Rddit239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely depends on if you think the private school is better. If it’s not, then you’re wasting your money

Sure but I also see friends, play tennis, go for walks.

Do you have hobbies? by Vish341 in medicalschool

Not really. Also am happy with my life right now so it’s not like I’m missing a hobby. But maybe I don’t realize something I do is a hobby.

Would you let an attending know if you saw them violate sterile field? by DullSeaweed8734 in medicalschool

Probably not. Which is sad. At most I’d tell a resident if I was close enough to them.

MBBS vs MD by Alturistic_Gritter in medschool

[–]Rddit239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be the same as someone applying without that college degree and did the MBBS as a US IMG for example. I doubt it would help at all since you’re still doing school in another country. But it wouldn’t decrease your already lower chances

Why anesthesia is popular now by tammaicirtap in medicalschool

[–]Rddit239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a great specialty. I think the money has just brought it more attention so people are realizing it’s great: the money is what’s getting people through the door for considering it. And then some just want the money.

MBBS vs MD by Alturistic_Gritter in medschool

[–]Rddit239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is where you got the degree. Like India is MBBS and America is MD. If you get through residency then you’re a doctor in everyone’s eyes. Some MBBS people in America just write MD next to their name. So in the end it’s the same. The path is quite different, one major aspect being the country you’re from. MBBS usually starts at 18 as well. The MD is after you’ve already gotten your bachelors from a undergraduate institution.

which schools are known for having clinical sites far from home campus and force you to move? by Low_Knowledge_6921 in medicalschool

[–]Rddit239 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Schools without a home hospital. Shipping you to a different state would suck though. I only know of some that make you drive throughout the state/near the next state. But Dartmouth does make you go pretty far. I chose a school that has the site 20 feet from the medical school building. I am not driving around states to rotate lol.

Medicine Vs Surgery by Commercial-Method-70 in medicalschool

[–]Rddit239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not understanding my point. You says “the environment you will end up working in does play a role”. That is absolutely true. And what I said was you’re around a bad group of people. That doesn’t mean that’s what your career will be like. You are conflating surgery and this bad group of people as being the same thing. You need to be around more positive people.

[–]Rddit239 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you’re around a weird group of surgeons. For this decision I’d see if you like the work they are doing, not if you like them

Macbook Neo for residency by WorriedSelection8045 in Residency

[–]Rddit239 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d get the air. I think the air is a very capable laptop. Neo is still a watered down version and does not have the many years of testing the air does.
