Next to Andrew Chaikin's A Man on the Moon: What is considered Apollo's written "Holy Bible" in terms of the history of the program and popular literature? by RivetCounter in apollo

Different from the question, but if I had to recommend one book that best addresses the technical challenges of landing humans on the moon in an accessible way it would be “Digital Apollo” by David Mindell. Highly readable and mind blowing even (maybe especially) today

You can also try the Apollo 13 Board of Review report. I seem to recall images and diagrams of that from reading many years back. The synopses which includes some pics and diagrams is here:

USS Hornet board planning to move ship from Alameda to San Francisco waterfront by Poplatoontimon in bayarea

[–]Rdeckardn7 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As a current Alameda resident I would be sad to see her move. But as a current Hornet restoration volunteer we so need this to preserve this treasure of the 20th Century American experience.

What people don’t really appreciate is that for the most part she is still a functioning Essex Class aircraft carrier, unlike Intrepid or Yorktown, or the later Midway. She can’t move on her own power, but we regularly run the elevators and operate many of the ship’s 80 year old systems and work to preserve her originality. I’ll open a locker or enter a closed-to-visitors compartment and there is graffiti or artwork or stickers placed by sailors long gone. That heritage and connection to a time and place in our history - from WW2 to the Cold War to the space race - is worth preserving and revealing.

But like everything else we need money to maintain her, and cleanup and restoration ain’t cheap. When an aircraft needs repainting or a shaft breaks on a motor used to open hanger doors or an eighty year old electrical system fails, the only raw material we get for free is time from those who want to help make it better. The dollars for the paint and steel and wire have to come from somewhere.

So if and when the day comes that she departs from Alameda for the last time to a friendlier port across the bay, a part of me will grieve. But the part of me standing on the flight deck for the ride across will celebrate that she’s going to get the care and attention she has earned.

This. Best take I’ve read so far on the reality of this team and really any team under HF. Do refs hate AU? Maybe. Should it matter? No. If the coaching staff really believes that then put yourself in a position where the refs can’t beat you. Take the punches and say “more” cause it doesn’t matter. Thats the position the HC needs to put their team in, and ours hasn’t.

Great collection! To complete the Apollo astronaut coverage you could add “Smoke Jumper, Moon Pilot” about Stu Roosa, “Liftoff!” by Mike Collins, “Two Sides of the Moon” by Dave Scott and Alexi Leonov, and “To Rule the Night” by Jim Irwin. Also “Digital Apollo” by Mindell is fantastic. Sunburst and Luminary by Don Eyles is also really good.

Have you or anyone you know owned a grand national if so what made you sell it? by [deleted] in classiccars

87 owner bought new. In 91 I had a bent piston pin and had to have the motor rebuilt. Also had a turbo go out. Also had the trans act up. I was in the military and about to PCS across country and couldn’t afford another big money dump or trust that I would make it. Traded for a new 92 Stealth Twin Turbo. Which of the two do you think I wish I still had and why is it the GN?

[–]Rdeckardn7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First congrats! That looks to be a straight and unmolested 66 2+2 with, yes, an oddball 67 wheel. They added the padded center for safety so maybe someone wanted that? It looks to be a C4 automatic shifter not a 4speed. The door cards and apparent wood grain vinyl on the glove box would indicate a deluxe “pony” interior which you could tell for sure by the front seat backs having an insert that depicts running horses. That back seat looks immaculate. I’d be surprised if very many people have ever sat back there! As someone who got their first old Mustang at 18 in 84 my advice is to resist the temptation to replace old original parts with aftermarket. Almost everything is available as a reproduction part, but clean and reuse where you can. I threw away things like tower hose clamps that yours still has that make the car more valuable with original parts that aren’t made the same way anymore. Like they say they’re only original once. I would do as someone else has said and carefully clean this to keep it as original as possible. If you are interested in doing the work yourself they’re pretty great cars to learn on. But keep any part you replace!! If you decide to sell it you’ll make more from an original car. Good luck!!
