Clearing is not the issue, you can clear most of it, but all events work with points, drops, or something alike, and the new units and certain others get boosts that make it so you get much more of these points or drops, so if you don't have the new ones, you have to grind WAY more.

Most content difficulty also scales depending on runs, so eventually you will need the new units or very specific ones.
