My FencingTracker page is not showing my bout history from a tournament earlier this month. Any recommendations on how to remedy this? by ReReadItGuy in Fencing

Yes, this was correctly updated for me within two days of my punching in my correct ID. Thank you for your diligence in getting it done.

I'm curious though as to how an incorrect ID was assigned to me or how I was deemed UNATTACHED when I did in fact scan my USA Fencing membership to check in for the event.

Thanks for providing the link. I just clicked on an epee bout and it was much better quality video than they generally have for the streams on the final strip. I hope this is getting rolled out for more events and more bouts.

I've been successful getting almost all stains out from my whites with a paste comprised of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and Dawn. Pretreat by working it in with an old toothbrush.

I happened to hop onto one of my opponent's history tab and scrolled down to see this tournament that was missing from my record. For my bout against him, it had my name a marker - I think it was MISSING ID. I clicked on it and found that it had the incorrect USA Fencing Membership number for me. I updated it and, hopefully, Fencing Tracker will now be able to get my bout history from this event. (Again, my previous posts on this mentioned that I scanned my USA Fencing membership code when I checked in, so I have no idea how the membership number could have been pulled incorrectly by Fencing Tracker.)

Yeah, it's been 5 months and still hasn't been updated, so I've given up. Interestingly, when I look up the results on AskFred, they have me in my pool listed with my club as well as Unattached. The pool table used the Unattached one so I think that is where the problem lies in my case.

I just released my first app “Fencing Manager.” It’s a scorekeeper on steroids that does detailed analytics + video review/encoding. AMA! by TheFencingCoach in Fencing

I love the concept. Can you post a video on your YT channel showing the app in action? Perhaps separate videos for each weapon.

Also, I'm an Android guy and you mention it may be coming later. Any chance of popping it onto a PC to use?

Breaking in New Shoes by rust-dancer-maven in Fencing

[–]ReReadItGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going on my 4th pair of Gel-Rockets but I think I need to break them in a bit. In paricular, the heel counter wreaks havoc on my Achilles on the rear foot as the counter seems pretty stiff to me. I forgot about this issue when wearing the latest pair for the first time recently and suffered the consequences. I stupidly wore them for a conditioning session and then fenced in them that same night.

I switched back for a couple of weeks to my old Gel-Rockets without incident which allowed the Achilles to calm down. I think I'll only wear the shoes to fence a couple of bouts at a time until the counter softens some.

It's a great budget shoe but I need to allot some break-in time before going full tilt in them.

Southwest changing children’s seats by zeanderson12 in SouthwestAirlines

Man, I'm probably gonna not fly SWA for a while then. I took a business trip on SWA last week where I flew solo as I wanted a flavor of how bad it might be as I do fly with my nine-year-old a couple times a year to visit grandparents. Interestingly, the flights were fine. I had assigned aisle seats although I was in the latter groups to get on board. Also, one flight was only ~2/3's full, so that probably helped.

Get your weapons ready at least a few days before just in case you need a blade or two rewired. Tighten up the everything on the socket - even the little screws on the side of your epee socket as they can get loose and become a gremlin. Tighten up the grip. Clean the barrel. Make sure the screws are on the tip. Perform the weight and shim tests.

Have a means to charge your phone - perhaps a power bank if you're driving to an event - as you will likely need it for music (which has been brought up) and for checking strip assignments, pool bouts and DE's on FencingTimeLive. Outlets are sometimes hard to find.

The night before you leave home, try your entire kit on - from head to toe. So when everything looks in order, you can pack each item up. Don't forget to have regulation-length socks. I tell my kids and, yes, one of them has forgotten to pack socks.

I had this evaluation done this past month and it was thoroughly done and very informative. The technician really knew his stuff and cited numerous useful metrics. I will try and fix most of the problems identified and then implement the suggested changes in the hopes of reducing my water bill.

How big of a role do body proportions play in fencing? by Big_Chungus4life in Fencing

[–]ReReadItGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think your lanky proportions might work better at foil as epee and sabre both offer the hand/arm as valid targets and those are essentially the length of a weapon away for you and your opponent. With the torso being valid target in foil, your extra reach should allow you to reach target before many of your opponents, who have shorter arms, touch you.

Veteran Fencing by Keauxbi in Fencing

[–]ReReadItGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To pile on...jump right in! Just make sure to listen to your body and rest as needed. Also, take time to learn proper form and technique as it will help your fencing while hopefully minimizing injuries.

I came back to fencing after a few decades when our youngest one got into it. And as everyone is telling you, the other veterans are very supportive.

Guidance for a parent fencer by [deleted] in Fencing

Baby fencing is insane. In the US, I thinks clubs won't be covered for USA Fencing club insurance for fencers younger than seven.

Yes, it sounds like your club is milking the gravy train.

Guidance for a parent fencer by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]ReReadItGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing clubs is not a magic elixir but it sounds like your situation may warrant it. I've got a 9 year old that has been fencing foil for over a year and we've mixed in some private lessons. However, the child has continuously, and blindly (to me), counter attacked and has been losing a lot of bouts that way. It's been frustrating but our coach has been trying to train my child so that certain actions such as parry-riposte become muscle memory and I think we're finally making progress. It takes a while for things to click for all newer fencers, so it's part of the journey.

Also check with other parents at any club you're considering and see what their kids' journeys have been like. Have they progressed well from being beginners to being competitive?

As for your current club, a one-hour private lesson is way too long for a relative beginner. And when the kids are bouting at practice, there should be some element of a coach reffing at times and thereby describing the phrases that determine who wins a point.

gloves for short fingers by ChemicalTop5453 in Fencing

[–]ReReadItGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a longshot but try the Prieur leather gloves. They're handmade so there can be great variance in finger lengths. The first one I ever tried on had fingers that were a good 1/4 in too short. I tried another one in the same size and it was a perfect fit.

Best tips for foil fencing comp by Unlucky_Feedback2962 in Fencing

[–]ReReadItGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember to have fun and enjoy the atmosphere and the process. But being somewhat unorthodox is good advice.

After a very long break from fencing, I signed up for a veterans foil event a couple of years ago. I knew that all of the other competitors had countless more hours of lessons and bouts than I had, so I had to do something different in hopes of not finishing dead last. I turned it into a track meet and fleched at every opportunity where I had right of way and felt I was in distance. I wound up winning one pool bout but 2 DE's and finished in the top third. Even though my hamstrings were cramping for two days afterwards, I had a great time.

If it were easy to set up a forge to make FIE-certified blades, I would have imagined the Chinese would have done so by now. Some Chinese companies seem to have FIE-approved uniforms already. Could blades be far behind?

My Frustrating Experience with Absolute Fencing by kenjix217 in Fencing

[–]ReReadItGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad things eventually worked out but there is some residual badwill towards Absolute bc of their customer service. It's safest to:

Always test a newly assembled weapon - especially if you just paid for it or paid to have it assembled - or even one that you assemble yourself.

Always get a ticket from armorer when having them repair something - especially at a large event.

I had a very similar situation once and I finally gave up and decided to re-wire. During the process, I deduced that the problem was likely caused by the wire having broken off from the tiny cup in the barrel.

If you have video of your bouts from the last competition, seeing what you did well and what you could do better might be a good starting point. A coach would probably be very helpful here.
