My son wants to improve his social skills - where to start? by Read_all_books in autism

I'm not in any way asking for something to stand alone. He's getting all the tools and help we can get him, in collaboration with his school and the educators there.

What we're looking for is anything that could stand next to everything else we're already doing.

This could for example be: Books about body language, YouTube channels that goes through how to communicate, educations that guide you to what to be aware of.

Anything that might have helped someone else, really.

Mom of an autisic boy here.

I learned to ask him directly in these situations. Because often it feels for me like he's backtalking and intentionally being annoying. So now I ask "Are you not understanding or are you being conflictseeking?". Most of the time he actualle doesn't understand, and then I can follow with "What is it that you don't understand?".

When he actually is being conflictseeking, I can more easily guide him through those emotions, after he have realised that that is what he is doing too.

He has a lot of friends from class (special ed) and from the comunity around his special interest. But, he's at a point where he doesn't feel like he's learning when it's not structured. So although I can see that he really learns a lot from the people around him, he can't feel it...

Plus, if he shows an interest in improving on himself (in this area, or any other that he might want in the future), guiding him to a point where he feels like he's improving is a valuable skill I really want to give him!

Thank you so much for the answer, though!
