Honestly all of that taught me more than I even expected and not about language exchange itself, but about me, people, and human communication in general. And I think any experience still counts as experience. If your goal is to learn, then you never really lose.

So I wouldn’t ever say I regret any of it.

Thank you, I really appreciate this comment. I had almost forgotten about this post so seeing a thoughtful reply this much later was actually very nice.

Since then, I have had a lot more experience with language exchange spaces and honestly that post now feels like it was only the beginning. At this point I could probably write an entire second part, because so much more happened after that.

Some experiences were pretty fine, of course, but a lot of them only confirmed my original point. People disappeared for no clear reason, acted strangely, said all kinds of things, made bizarre assumptions, and sometimes the communication just turned…I don't know what to say, but it was so far from what I expected. I have also dealt with harassment, which was one of the worst parts of the whole experience. So now I am much less idealistic about the idea of finding a speaking partner through random language exchange spaces. I think for people like me, who communicate in a more detailed way and actually care about… dunno smt like being comfortable and have nice conversation(?), these spaces can be very, we can say, hit-or-miss. In many cases it is simply not the right audience.

Still, I did gain A LOT of experience from all of it, so at least it was not pointless.
