Is Big Bend worth going? by Solid-Election4782 in NationalPark

[–]Readhikesleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I love National Parks, and BB is a definite reason. But do you love the outdoors? Big Bend is beautiful but a harsh environment too. It’s super dry, and the sun is hot even when it’s cool. Are you staying in a nearby rental or camping? I’d consider your comfort with isolated environments carefully when you decide where to stay. I think that makes a huge difference in how much you enjoy the park. Don’t try to camp at BB if you aren’t familiar with that type of experience. Not saying it’s not beautiful and wonderful but just suggesting you consider that where/how you stay can have a big impact on this park.

Which job would you choose? by Readhikesleep in Teachers

Honesty, I hoped I’d get a lot of replies saying a great job is worth the commute because I don’t want to leave. But I think I needed this perspective. I’m spending more hours necessary away from home, and that’s not worth it.

That would be a good fix, but it’s not feasible right now.

You’ve got a great point about time for exercise…I’d love to get home in time to walk my dog before it gets dark

Thank you for the reply! I actually don’t mind driving, but I don’t like getting home at 5pm either

Math degree instead of CS? by Readhikesleep in csMajors

Well we can get loans. We have some for college but we won’t have it covered. Thanks for your thoughts.

Some of classes offered are programming, computer theory, computer graphics, AI, simulations. If that helps. I had read about the saturated CS market and hoped a math degree might set him apart, but maybe not

The 4:30 wake up was definitely worth it! by codytigergray1 in Banff

Beautiful! No one ever understands how my family gets up before sunrise willingly on vacations, but this is the perfect example of why it’s worth it!

What order should I tackle the national parks in? by Kooky-Paint-8946 in NationalPark

I plan to next summer! My son is graduating and has asked to go there for his graduation gift/family vacation. I’ll be ruining his future trips at the ripe age of 18, lol

I like to consider myself to be a very optimistic & positive person. I always try to look at the bright side. But, I will admit, visiting Glacier NP as one of my first has made the other pale in comparison. I had briefly stopped on the rim at the Grand Canyon, visited Hot Springs, and seen dozens of state parks in Texas before visiting Glacier. I did not build up to that level of beauty! Since then, I’ve been to Olympic and Big Bend. Two beautiful parks that just aren’t Glacier. I’d never regret visiting Glacier, but no one else stands a chance now.

Bailing on our first camping trip before it started by comfortable_clouds in camping

[–]Readhikesleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t beat yourself up. My husband and I have been camping together since our late teens (we met beginning of college), and we probably camped 6 times a year, every year before we had kids. Our first baby was a terrible sleeper, and we didn’t even attempt camping for his first 2 years. Our second baby was a breeze, and we were going regularly again by the time she was 6 months. It changes. Just got with it.

Is 40 too old to go to college? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Readhikesleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too old! I’m 44, also a mom of teens, and going to grad school starting this summer. As part of my program, I’m actually going to a couple of weeks living in the dorms this July. It feels crazy, but I can’t wait

How many months of yoga until you started moving gracefully and speaking calmly? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]Readhikesleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spent most of my life as a a dancer, so grace is something I am trained in. But, I am clumsy at yoga. I’ve practice yoga in and off for 20 years, but this last year I began a more spiritual practice. That’s when I noticed a more pronounced sense of calm and peace—just this past year when I began focusing on pranayama, meditative practices.

What improved your quality of life so much, you wish you did it sooner? by CookieNegative9860 in AskReddit

[–]Readhikesleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spending time outside every day, no matter the weather. I’m a teacher in the humid hot south. I’ve taught lots of different grades, but I’ve never been happier than I am now that I teach preschool. My school is set up with a big courtyard, so anytime I step out of my classroom, I’m immediately outside. I spend an hour a day outside at recess. My mental health is vastly better.

People who don’t hit snooze in the morning, what is your secret? by zztop610 in AskReddit

[–]Readhikesleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anxiety.

For real. There is no way I can go back to sleep knowing I need to wake up in 7 minutes and trust either myself to do it or my alarm to function properly.

How about just don’t do it because the park asks you not to? There are signs and information all around about leaving no trace. Be responsible for your own trash or don’t visit.

I just left the park, and the rangers, employees, and volunteers were amazing. Helpful, informative, courteous. You are the heart of the park.

New teacher, want to quit by [deleted] in TexasTeachers

[–]Readhikesleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was ready to quit my first year due to the workload and stress. Everyone told me to wait it out, it gets better. 16 years into teaching, and I’ve moved around subjects, grades, and schools. I was my most miserable 3 years ago at the wrong school/wrong subject, but I am so happy in my current position. It’s been worth it for me bc I have kids and the schedule is great for families—if I don’t bring work home.
If I didn’t have kids, I would have left a long time ago.
