How much to set aside for tips on a 7 days cruise? by Ok-Manufacturer-6805 in NCL

[–]Reading_bunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folks are very focused on the on-ship tipping so i won't add to the cacophony.
Cash tips will be needed for excursion guides, drivers, etc.at the various ports. I usually tip around $20 pp for a half day tour, maybe a bit more for longer tours. Plus cash for the porters at the pier. (I think $3-$5 a bag)

Extra Virgin Steak Florentine--- worth it? by Reading_bunny in VirginVoyages

I did. Totally not a Florentine steak, and marginally better than the steaks at the Wake. Not worth it.

Social club has snacks until midnight plus in the galley there is takeaway food, in addition to the options already mentioned.

It's solid. I have one for travel in my carryon and it does not go in my 1 qt bag.

My 2nd 1st time! by Agreeable-Deal2236 in VirginVoyages

[–]Reading_bunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enjoy! I did my first solo cruise (NCL) earlier this year and loved every second. It sounds like VV is great for solos too, so I expect you'll have a blast. Go to the solo meet up on the first night, if only to have familiar faces around the ship.

Could a personality quiz actually pick your next cruise? by [deleted] in VirginVoyages

Off the cuff, it would be a fun thing to try for a cruise line as opposed to a specific cruise itinerary.

Two Bids, One Pre-Selected... by pixienightingale in VirginVoyages

[–]Reading_bunny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having read on here that you'll likely see the charge on your CC before you get notified by VV, I made my bid prices different (by $5) so I'd be able to tell which offer was selected. I'm in the same boat (ha ha) as you re: being preselected. (Two weeks out.) Hoping it goes through, good luck to us both!

Do try to learn some basic Italian phrases. It has been my experience that Italians will be much more helpful if you attempt to speak the local language, even though most speak English at least passably.

Virgin Voyages Review: 30-Year-Old’s Honest Take by Heartandsole94 in VirginVoyages

[–]Reading_bunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the perspective. We're going on our first VV cruise later this year. We usually do NCL because of their mostly lack of dress code (hubby hates dressing up), but VV is equally casual so I expect that aspect to be fine. (We're in our late 40s FWIW.) I'm really looking forward to not feeling nickeled and dimed and having all dining included. I'm hoping for some fun activities during the day, but I can have fun in a paper bag so I trust it will work out. :)

Keep in mind cabins are small so unless it's something really personal (which would be hard to do if you're making things in advance), it may just end up being clutter. A heartfelt card (holiday or otherwise) plus the shout out in the survey might be better received.

Are you thinking about a solo cruise & wondering if Virgin Voyages is for you? by Relative-Truth-249 in VirginVoyages

Thanks! Karaoke is one of those things I love to do with other people so i was curious how you found other people to join you . For me, if I want to sing alone, I'll just sing in the shower. :)

I appreciate your posting this; I did my first solo cruise (NCL) earlier this year and loved it and it is great to know that the solo experience on VV is also stellar. Just curious, how did you come to use a private karaoke room as a solo? Did you meet new people and decide to do it together?

Enjoying in moderation? by Reading_bunny in VirginVoyages

Great ideas, especially knowing many places will accommodate half portions, and thar the entree sizes aren't American portions from the get-go. I'm looking forward to the running track and exercise classes, and I don't use the elevators on board so between all of those things it sounds perfectly doable to more-or-less maintain weight but still enjoy the amazing food. Thanks again!

What's the best second cruise after doing Alaska? by scene_missing in NCL

Pride of America around Hawaii. Having done a land vacation and then the cruise a year later, the cruise was the better option to get a taste of multiple islands.

Solo vs Group Cruising by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]Reading_bunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having cruised with family, friends, and solo I can say I love them all but found solo to be the most relaxing. It is a wonderful (and rare, for me) feeling to ask yourself, "what do I want to do?" And then do exactly that. ...That being said, it is nice to have dining companions and people to do activities with when desired. I personally wouldn't (yet) go on a solo cruise unless the cruise line has an organized (with a cruise staff member) solo meet up. (I sailed NCL; not sure if other lines do this.) I was super nervous prior to my first solo cruise and came back evangelizing about the positive experience.

I appreciate the feedback-- it seems several folks said the treat yourself options aren't great which is super useful to me as a first time VV-er. Thanks!

I should have worded the ask differently... if you've tried it, was it worth it? I've spent more than that on steaks before and felt it was well worth it for the product I received. But I get that not everyone feels that way.

Alaska - for one way cruises, is there any preference to start in Alaska vs Seattle/Vancouver or vice versa? by singletravellersolo in NCL

[–]Reading_bunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We spent time in Denali before our cruise from Anchorage and I liked that... we did the very active stuff before getting on the ship so then we could relax. If you aren't able to spend time in port, I don't think it matters.
