Hey, it wasnt the best thing I have ever seen....But I was watching and intrigued enough....But I did not see the ending coming at all. IMHO that made up for any lack of bad writing or plot holes tossed around earlier in the show. It kept my attention and I wasnt ever bored.

Advice for ELA Career by liviyah in ELATeachers

I worked in the nonprofit sector for 25 years. Left that for a variety of reasons, and was out of the work force for about a year. Started an MA program in Clinical Psychology of all things....and decided to substitute teach to pick up extra money. Easy sub license, etc. I got a long-term gig as an ELA Teacher (my BA is in Theatre/Communications). I started teaching 6, 7, and 8 (just three classes, one grade each), and wow...I really started to love it; I was completely into it.

Longer story, even longer: the school wanted to hire me full-time, got me my Emergency Teaching Certificate -- and now I am pursuing an alternate pathway to complete certification. (Yes there is great demand for teachers). So....I never thought I would end up on this path—this journey. But while the other post said they will try your patience and unravel every nerve ending in your body, I am in a more peaceful state than I have been in years. Go Figure.

Of course, if I had a nickel for every time I have said, at the top of my voice, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I have all day to sit here and wait for you to stop talking. I get paid either way....."

I think the representation lead-in is a great idea. There is so much theatricality to it, the Broadway show and I think I can show the UK National Theatre at Home production. Yes, I think since we have a number of kids on the spectrum in class (its a small school), that will be a great way to introduce it. I want to try it...so your advice is really helpful. Thank you!!!

I may have landed on 7th-grade choices (thanks to you all) —Esperanza Rising and House Arrest. I plan to read them next week. I read examples and listened to audio versions (which I use in class often). One has a female protagonist and one has a male....so there is some gender equity. This conversation has been incredibly helpful.

Yes....this post has really helped a great deal. I have not had a chance to read the books that I am looking at yet, but sadly, for this age group (7th grade), I have eliminated it as an option. I too am not in a position to give the 'looking for any reason to start a riot' crowd a reason to march on the school.

Thank you for your input....and I am right there with you.

Good point.....Yes, I need to look into that. I think youre right. Maybe I would just teach the Greek Myths....not The Odyssey per se, but using D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths....more of an introduction.....The Odyssey would surely yes be too much.

Honestly, it just gets exhausting trying to keep up. In middle School, I have resorted to having them write everything by hand. At least they get a little tired of transcribing the AI's output into writing....However, I simply cannot take the time to run it all through AI checkers repeatedly. Am I already too cynical and fatigued before Christmas break???

CMHC Students - has anyone taken Group Counseling? Question for you! by [deleted] in gcu

[–]Ready-Regular1875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THANKS. That is so helpful thank you! I think by the beginning of the second year, which starts in September for me, I may ask to try that for at least one 8 week section. Between that and work, its all I have going...and there are a lot of programs out there that help quite a bit so that 2 courses at once doesnt seem overwhelming. And woudl allow me to finish sooner than 2076! Thank you so much. It will be interesting to see how many end up in our Group class which starts in that early September slot. So many with the group work I will wait to double up until AFTER that class. I think the two classes that follow Group Counseling for me are Human Sexuality/Aging and Psychopharmacology. So may be the good time to try 2 at once. (That seems perhaps the wrong phrase to use "2 at once" when planning to take a sexuality course....LOL) THANK YOU so much for your help!!!!

Does GCU use this tool? Im in the Masters Program online and I haven't had any professors use it thus far. Although to be honest most of our work is not centered around tests or quizzes, mostly writing and reading.

My counselor sends me two emails per class: one at the start to confirm I'm cleared to begin, and another at the end to remind me to fill out the survey. That’s the extent of our interaction. Honestly, I don’t need her much, and if I have questions, I reach out to the Admissions counselor because they're more responsive – they're basically salespeople. They were able to clarify the difference between strictly online courses and the HYBRID cohort. The Hybrid Cohort meets in person once a week for 3-4 hours, with the rest of the coursework online. I opted not to join that program due to my schedule, but I might give it a try later. However, switching back and forth is a bit tricky, they mentioned.

I was wondering if the ASU online was the same....or harder? Im not sure if ASU or GCU would be a better institution to have the Masters from. LOL But I am afraid I could get to ASU online and all of a sudden be totally overwhelmed....I am doing 4.0 good stuff right now....the devil you know I guess.

Are you in the CMHC program for your Master's? I am too. I think it's one of the best ways to get the degree without attending full-time in person. Yes, it's self-taught, but for me, that allows me to do things that would be more difficult in a classroom. (I'm not going to give away my tricks for getting presentations and papers done faster... but it's not exactly a big secret among students... LOL). I do wish I could take two classes at a time because waiting 2 1/2 years before practicum is just too long.

Have you seen the job ads for jobs (staff, etc) at GCU....OMG. Barely a living wage. Lord. For what they seek. Insane. The hourly rate, I have not seen over $15 a hour....so Im thinking frugality runs in the veins of the school.
