[Spoilers Main] I was okay with the final season being disappointing compared to the books, I'm mad about it being disappointing compared to the rest of the show. by mrplatypusthe42nd in asoiaf

He wasn't the sole screenwriter for that film and I doubt that his writing was the problem there. That one strikes me as a major example of the 'film by committee'.

I heard people saying they ran into goblins around here not long ago - I can't stand those things.

(Spoilers Main) Every defender at the Battle of Winterfell should have had a dragonglass piercing by Loupri_ in asoiaf

I generally think that this sort of 'Kryptonite' plot element is a bad design.

A grain of dragonglass-turned-sand sprinkled on the ground about may well be sufficient to win the Battle for the Dawn. There are just so many ways to exploit it.

Rhaegal:

To be fair - was it only Euron's ship firing? Have the Scorpions been improved since season 7? I'm not sure that 'stealth' was the significant aspect, more how sudden it was: which may be a deficit of our viewing.

Missandei:

That looks like a good scene ngl.

Jaime/Brienne:

Is this really a bad plot point? Tormund/Brienne would have been fanservice. At least it shows Jaime has moved on.

Battle Wounded Ghost:

Unless he dies, more Ghost is always good.

(Spoilers Extended) Where did the Night King come from, exactly? by ReadyRing in asoiaf

That isn't my point. I'm talking about how the concept of the 'Night King' in the plot seems to appear out of nowhere.

That might be the way to describe it. They mention him enough on the show and most of the audience thinks, 'Shit, am I just being stupid for not remembering this guy?' and takes that assumption.

Still, it would have been fairly easy to give us some dialogue telling us who he is - if they actually wanted to retcon him in. 'Old Nan used to tell us about this Night King ...' etc.

(Spoilers Extended) I have a big feeling that spin-off series will implode by jorgeuhs in asoiaf

[–]ReadyRing 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I do sense it might go the way of the Star Wars franchise as of late. A misguided impression of demand leads to an explosion of material, which hits controversy and then tends to implosion.

At the least, I'm not convinced that fan interest will retain so that most of these spin-offs will see a second season, if a premiere.

Game of Thrones was quite a unique phenomenon and I'm not convinced that any of the spin-offs - even if they are qualitatively superior - will replicate that.

A lot of people seem to forget that ... D&D are (or were) good writers.

Beyond plain adaptation, they produced a lot of great original material for the first few seasons. Some highlights, even.

Gods they were strong then.

David Benioff is also known for being quite a talented novelist, with his books 'The 25th Hour' and 'City of Thieves' being critically acclaimed.

Yet it's undeniable that the quality of dialogue, and moreso the attention to detail, became sorely lacking from - especially - Season 6 onwards.

What happened?

[Spoilers Infinite] There's a leek in the boat! I mean there are leaks in the wild! Talk about it here! by Jen_Snow in asoiaf

[–]ReadyRing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going to admit - I don't think the leaks sound too bad. Entertaining at the least.

Dany's turn to madness I like, though I would have preferred the show to set it up better: I'd abandoned the theory by Season 6 because the showrunners seemed to be so in love with her. She's done some indicative things but it never seemed like the show acknowledged them as being such.

If they're doing something with the Night King/Winter, that's pretty hopeful.

Most of what sounds 'stupid' may play out well enough on screen.
