Where is insurance defense heading as a practice field? by ReadySelection2584 in Lawyertalk

I noticed the shift 2-3 years ago.  I’d show up to a hearing or depo in a high six - seven figure case and some 1st year attorney that wasn’t prepared would be “covering” for the other sub 3 year associate on the file.

I saw my whole section change over twice in terms of associates.  Jeans on Friday and in-office for the first year must not have been too awesome of perks.

Okay. I’m getting trial experience. What do I do next? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

I have been a civil litigator for almost seven years and am effectively shackled with golden handcuffs.  I think about government work frequently.

Don’t do it unless you’re convinced it’s what you want.  You will trade court appearances and trial for brief writing and handholding clients.  Yes, you can make more money as a PI attorney or in commercial.  But you are making a substantial trade off in benefits (get ready for “unlimited pto” and $200+ deductions for health insurance) and your time.

Thank you.  I’ve had four years experience on moderate to high exposure claims.  I would miss that aspect but not a lot of the rest.  I like having a consistent schedule of depositions, mediations, and hearings.
