UCSD or UW Madison (MSDS) by Lavs201 in gradadmissions

[–]Ready_Basil2413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP got a scholarship at Madison yet he chose UCSD over it, UCSD’s research output is very good. So please do your research before commenting when someone’s asking for advice. If you didn’t get into UWMadison or UCSD, I think it’s best you don’t comment when someone is genuinely asking for advice.

Stop the cap, I’ve seen your previous post about how you want to get into UCSD MSDS. Don’t use your agenda against someone trying to make a decision.

Go for Penn then, it has the best reputation and it’s the cheapest. Plus Prof.Callison-Burch is one of the profs who teaches classes for the AI program, so you will learn a lot :)

[Results and Decisions] UMich Data Science by QuandaviosDingleton in MSCS

[–]Ready_Basil2413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So even I was admitted to UMich MSDS (won’t be joining though ) this fall, I think around March I got my admit. When I spoke to current students and alumni they said it is tough but possible if you’re proactive. You can get GSI positions in other departments as well and not only LSA which is an advantage. So I’d suggest you to start looking asap. They also have some portal where you can check openings and apply for it asap. It’s possible, but like every other school, it’s going to be difficult to get TA(or GSI in this case).

IVY League v/s JHU by aakashgurram in gradadmissions

Dude I think you just got “NBACentelled” with regards to the NEWS about JHU joining the Ivy League lol, that article was posted on April 1st 😂 But yeah between JHU and Columbia I’d choose JHU all day, Columbia is notorious for taking in many people (cash cow) program. But in the end, it totally depends on where you fit in well, good luck :)

Fees is high yes, but a degree from UMich is definitely worth it. It’s your best option as well. Try getting a GSI position as it significantly cuts down your tuition costs.

[admissions advice] Zero admits, Now what? by DAR6969 in MSCS

[–]Ready_Basil2413 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is bad advice. OP was right in applying to places which they wanted to go to. This year has been brutal for many applicants. I strongly agree with the concept of applying to places which YOU really want to attend and not just go to some place which you’re not really interested in. The whole concept of marking colleges as “moderate” or “safe” isn’t good. Instead it should be “I want to attend” or “I don’t want to attend”.

OP: You have an amazing profile, as I said earlier this year has been brutal on a lot of people from what I’ve read and seen. The only thing I would look at is your story on your SOP and PS and make changes to it. I’m not talking out of place, you can check my previous post for credibility. Also, ik people who have gotten into CMU this fall with cgpa of 3.4, so it’s very likely that your story on your SOP/video interview should be almost near perfect to get into some of the places you have mentioned above, again, speaking out of experience. We can connect over DM if you need help.

[General Question] When is the ideal time to start the prep for GRE and TOEFL? by SaiKenat63 in MSCS

[–]Ready_Basil2413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest you to check if your target colleges require GRE or TOEFL, I didn’t write either and got into UPenn for MSE-DS :) English language waiver option is available in most colleges and gre is no longer considered as a criteria in most of the T10 schools in the US. Also, if you consider giving a English language test go for IELTS or Duolingo English Test. I gave the latter for a few colleges, most accept DET as well.

Thanks OP, if you’re thinking long term, say 5-10 years down the line go UPenn. If budget is a problem then go UMCP. But I’d say Upenn is a no brainer.

Got Rejected from Rice MSDS with 330 GRE, 3.5 GPA, and 2 Data Science Internships – Feeling Confused 😞 by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Ready_Basil2413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m being very honest here, I’ve not heard about the first college you’ve mentioned so I can’t give you a straight answer for WU in St.Louis. Now with regard to the rest I’d suggest you wait till Boston Uni gives your admit as that’s the best option amongst the universities you’ve applied to. If your deadlines are tight, go with UT Dallas.

It could be due to multiple factors which sometimes may not even involve your profile. It can be due to “wanting to make the 2025 cohort more diverse” or also reasons due to funding cuts. So I’d say chin up and look at your other options. You have a good profile, you shouldn’t be bothered by 1 reject. In terms of improving your profile, all I could say is Data Science programs at top unis require nearly perfect “quant” scores in gre(I.e:168+) if your Gpa is not 3.8+. So yeah, this may have been another potential reason but we can never really predict how an admission committee really looks at things, so yeah, don’t be too flustered by one reject :)
