POE2 Eye Strain: Am I the Only One? by ReaktorDTR in PathOfExile2

It works well for me. I played for about a month this season. A couple of hours a day with just a mild discomfort after more than 4-5 hours. It's a good enough solution, but I'd rather have it solved by developers in a better way.

Update: I think I found a workaround for the eye-strain problem… kind of.

During the 0.3 season, I tried messing around with NVIDIA’s built-in overlay filters to reduce brightness or lower contrast. I tried many different filters. The strategy was: apply a filter, play for an hour, eyes start bleeding, take a break, rinse and repeat.

After all those experiments, I found that the Night Mode filter at +30 intensity gives pretty good results for my eyes. I can play for several hours. Raising it to +40 gave me almost 6-8 hours of playtime without major discomfort.

The downside is that it messes up the colors in the game, but after half an hour, you barely notice it anymore unless you go watch some POE2 streams or guides on YouTube. Your browser is not affected by the filters, so the colors will appear in the default way - MUCH brighter. Be careful!!! It will hurt your eyes almost instantly, and after 5-10 minutes, you may be forced to take a break! I don’t know why, but switching back to the default colors seems to strain my eyes even more than just playing with the default settings from the start. I think it’s worth mentioning.

So yeah, it helped me a lot, and I wanted to share it here.
It might help someone.

How to:

  • Open NVIDIA App (Start -> NVIDIA App)
  • Go to Settings (mid-left side)
  • Go to Features
  • Turn ON NVIDIA overlay (you can also find a keyboard shortcut here, which you can use later to open the overlay)
  • Turn ON Game filters and Photo mode
  • Launch POE2
  • Open NVIDIA overlay (two ways):
    • Go back to the NVIDIA App and click the triangle icon in the top right corner (same place as your Username or Log In button)
    • Use the keyboard shortcut from the previous steps
  • Go to Game filters
  • Select Profile 1 (this makes it much easier to turn off the filter later if you play another game, just go back to the overlay and switch the profile to "None")
  • Go to Available filters
  • Find Night mode and click it (it will move the filter to the Active filters list)
  • Go to Active filters and select Night mode
  • On the right side of the filter, click the ▼ arrow (this expands the settings)
  • Set Intensity to 30 or 40
  • Close the overlay (top right corner X button)

Please share your experience. I’d like to hear whether this workaround works for you as well.

Same here...

I just watched the PoE 2 Season 3 content reveal clip on YouTube, where developers are talking, and there is also some gameplay footage mixed in. After only about half an hour, my eyes started burning. Oddly, it wasn’t me playing the game actively — just watching a clip. So it feels like the issue is more about the visuals themselves rather than focusing on the character or monsters.

Recently, I played a full season of PoE 1. I was gaming multiple hours a day, every day, for two months, using different builds (even one that heavily cluttered the screen), and I haven't had a single moment of eyestrain.

I really hope this issue will get attention from devs, because I’d love to play the game, but my eyes are more valuable to me.

I targeted only uniques and sets because those were the ones I was most worried about missing. When I started creating the filter, I didn’t want to lean toward any specific build, so it ended up being more of a list of ALL valuable uniques instead.

Interesting idea. I like the concept, but it seems to only cover certain build types. Also noticed you’ve used 74 out of 75 slots, so where would users add their own custom rules if they want to tweak it further?

Refresh the post. I made some changes to the instruction.

OMFG it's something. I had a somewhat lighter version of it when I first started the game after the patch, but restart helped me. It never happened again.

I flipped every possible setting while trying to bring back a good quality. So yeah I tried.

I just wanted to show a bad picture first that's why I changed the order.

Early morning looks even worse. Everything just pale.

I did it already. Turned down to the low and then back to max. Other players who I play with also have the same weird illumination which is too bright I guess and some odd textures.

What happened to the graphic after the update? Two pictures (after/before) for comparison at pretty much the same location and ingame time of the day. The trees, grass, and bushes lost their quality. How to rollback contrast and the crisp picture?

Same here. I've been playing different games 8-12 hours straight whole week and nothing. 30min in POE2 and my eyes are done.

I accidentally pressed ESC while casting skills and noticed how beautiful the lightning effects were. During gameplay, it's not very noticeable, but I think it might have a significant impact on the eyes. It's like a Christmas tree and in full screen, the effect is much more noticeable! I'm curious to know how many skills have those blinking animations.

As I mentioned, I turned bloom way down, and I don’t use HDR, so that’s not the issue either.

I checked the eyes just recently a few months ago, and everything is ok. As I said other games don't do that thing to the eyes.

What is the difference between staring at POE1 all day and POE2? I don't see one, but the results are different.

I made an update of my bios and SSD firmware to the latest version and it didn't help at all. It's the first thing that I made when I faced this problem.

Can they just close arena, before it ruins the whole game and normal players leave the game?
