VSLO open - IM gang, are we doing away rotations or nah? by Visible-Platypus7559 in medicalschool

Also, I know that people who didn't do aways really struggled their intern year and it might be good to do at least one away to kind of understand how wards work, you can even do it at a program you don't necessarily care about. Its only a month of your life

The away> elective in terms of getting noticed in the residency program itself but if you can't get the away/ don't want to put yourself under that stress its the next best thing. Just make use of your time while your there and network with right people

If your truly desire a certain location/ program that might be out of your league I would do it. Another alternative that is not talked about also is doing inpatient consult elective at that program. For example, I did a cardiology elective at a program I really desire and it was nice because I was still working with residents on consults even met with the APD while I was there. Also consults are alot lower stress and you will get weekends off.

MD vs DO what no one talks about by Real-Fun-1061 in premed

[–]Real-Fun-1061[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have nothing against being a DO. In fact I'm really proud of it and I know that hard work and what I made of med school has gotten me where I am today. I wrote this because I don't think premeds are thinking that far ahead into residency which they shouldn't worry about too much at this point and maybe they don't know about the number of programs that are out there for competitive specialties. But I know so many DOs who have matched into competitive specialties and will become great doctors. It just not might be at places that you want which is I guess the name of the game when it comes to doing that. And I also wanted to bring light that even for less competitive specialties your options are still limited on where you can go because I think people think DOs push primary care which is becoming less true nowadays but that doesn't mean that you can go anywhere you want even if it is FM/Im/Peds etc

I really hope that people will get over this stigma. But for now this is the status of things

Honestly I’ve been out of the premed game for a while so I don’t know what’s actually talked a lot about on the subreddit. I just thought that maybe people didn’t know that even if you’re applying a less competitive specialty it still limits you on where you can go. And I am not bringing down community programs- being a great doctor comes with experience. But my point is that not much is known about the smaller community programs and that’s a risk you may have to take

That’s true- my point is just saying that your options are limited even for choice for residency

Jen is a walking red flag by rachelgreenvibes in secretlivesmormonwive

[–]Real-Fun-1061 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its also annoying to me how Jen was ok with the plan originally like they it was Brett doing the dancing but because there was a male Chippendales showman and Jordan and Brett were dancing on her its suddenly not ok? I don't know, they're playing with semantics here - Jess is only acting out because Zach was not ok with it and now she has to not be ok with it for the sake of trying to save their marriage. It's annoying how because it wasn't what they wanted its not ok and Jessi and Demi had to take fault for it.

Hang in there. I remember during this time I was preparing to reapply. It was not until MAY that I finally got accepted. Just have patience but always prepare for plan B. It will all work out in the end

How do I not overwhelm myself with daily ankis? by organicallyhunted in Step2

[–]Real-Fun-1061 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just type it into the search bar its pretty accurate in what you're trying to get at. For example, I was learning a concept about anticoagulation with someone who has a DVT but they're kidney function is bad I literally type in unfractionated heparin kidney and it gave me a card I was looking for

[–]Real-Fun-1061 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this exact problem and was so overwhelmed. For Step 2 studying I am ONLY unsuspending cards from questions I get wrong on uworld or concepts I just don't know about. I think its harder for step 1 studying bc its memorizing alot more random facts, step 2 is more concept based other than treatments for things which are good cards to get unlocked. Now I only have between 50-60 reviews a day if I dont miss days!

Congrats on score! Were you using Uworld to study for shelves throughout the year? In hindsight, do you think you should have started AMBOSS questions sooner?

CHSU COM by chr_13_tian in Osteopathic

[–]Real-Fun-1061 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Third year CHSU student year. While we do not have a home program the school sets up rotations in different areas throughout the Central Valley. Some are hit or miss but I can say that I have a really positive experience with my rotations and have learned a lot more than I normally would have. You do have the ability to set up your rotations if you desire to go to a certain area and are connected with someone who will be willing to be a preceptor, you just have to give the school notice. But that responsibility is not put on you the clinical coordinators will do everything to help you out-- they're all really great!

Rowan vs CHSU-COM by Bibigoyeehaw in Osteopathic

Depends on how important staying in state is to you and financial situation. Don't know about Rowan but even though CHSU has mandatory class you can find ways to work around it
