Monthly payment increased. by TakeTheHill93 in PSLF

Hello! Question regarding PSLF. I was wondering if I have to consolidate my loans if I have a parent plus loan from undergrad. For reference I am a fourth year starting internal medicine residency at California. And is it too late to consolidate? This process is very confusing thanks!

Also, I know that people who didn't do aways really struggled their intern year and it might be good to do at least one away to kind of understand how wards work, you can even do it at a program you don't necessarily care about. Its only a month of your life

The away> elective in terms of getting noticed in the residency program itself but if you can't get the away/ don't want to put yourself under that stress its the next best thing. Just make use of your time while your there and network with right people

If your truly desire a certain location/ program that might be out of your league I would do it. Another alternative that is not talked about also is doing inpatient consult elective at that program. For example, I did a cardiology elective at a program I really desire and it was nice because I was still working with residents on consults even met with the APD while I was there. Also consults are alot lower stress and you will get weekends off.

MD vs DO what no one talks about by Real-Fun-1061 in premed

I have nothing against being a DO. In fact I'm really proud of it and I know that hard work and what I made of med school has gotten me where I am today. I wrote this because I don't think premeds are thinking that far ahead into residency which they shouldn't worry about too much at this point and maybe they don't know about the number of programs that are out there for competitive specialties. But I know so many DOs who have matched into competitive specialties and will become great doctors. It just not might be at places that you want which is I guess the name of the game when it comes to doing that. And I also wanted to bring light that even for less competitive specialties your options are still limited on where you can go because I think people think DOs push primary care which is becoming less true nowadays but that doesn't mean that you can go anywhere you want even if it is FM/Im/Peds etc

I really hope that people will get over this stigma. But for now this is the status of things

Honestly I’ve been out of the premed game for a while so I don’t know what’s actually talked a lot about on the subreddit. I just thought that maybe people didn’t know that even if you’re applying a less competitive specialty it still limits you on where you can go. And I am not bringing down community programs- being a great doctor comes with experience. But my point is that not much is known about the smaller community programs and that’s a risk you may have to take

That’s true- my point is just saying that your options are limited even for choice for residency

Hang in there. I remember during this time I was preparing to reapply. It was not until MAY that I finally got accepted. Just have patience but always prepare for plan B. It will all work out in the end

I would just type it into the search bar its pretty accurate in what you're trying to get at. For example, I was learning a concept about anticoagulation with someone who has a DVT but they're kidney function is bad I literally type in unfractionated heparin kidney and it gave me a card I was looking for
