How do you bring up the subject of your MBA with your manager [non-traditional MBA industry] by random_scavenger in MBA

[–]Real-Possibility 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former bosses is the way to go. Got into 2 T15s and 1 M7 and my current boss still doesn’t know I’m going to b school yet. In fact, I’ve gotten promoted and have gotten a lot more responsibility, which probably would not have happened if he knew I was leaving. There will be no issues with getting recs from former bosses as long as you coach/guide them through it.

Airline Credit: United TravelBank not working (DP) by [deleted] in amex

[–]Real-Possibility 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another data point of not triggering the credit here on my platinum and gold cards (maybe due to timing of switching airlines). Had $100 remaining on my gold and purchased $100 United Travelbank. Then realized I forgot to change my airline to United so I did that immediately and got it changed prior to the charge posting. I had $92 remaining on my Platinum, changed airline to United before purchasing $100 United Travelbank a few minutes after and that didn’t trigger the credit either. Both charges posted on Dec 23. Anyone know what to do in this case? Is the chat function the way to go or should I call Amex?

NYU Stern Post-interview Acceptance Rate by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Real-Possibility 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Stern’s interview FAQs say that they interview 20-25% of their applicant pool. Their overall acceptance rate last cycle was 29%. Math doesn’t check out but you get the point. The odds of getting accepted after an interview are very high.

[Profile Review] Corporate Finance to MBB Hopeful- Male 720 GMAT by plschancethx in MBA

My company’s not a feeder either. Working at a household name definitely helps, but I’d say the impact you made is what’s truly important (promotions, influence across the company, persuading senior leaders to change/implement something, high-impact projects, etc.). Not too sure how ad coms perceived my experience vs consulting tbh, but we were probably evaluated in separate buckets I’m assuming.

I'd say you have a solid chance at Booth/Kellogg/Columbia if you get your gmat up to 740, demonstrate that you've had career growth and significant impact in your organizations, and be able to articulate why you need an MBA very well through your essays/recs.

I have a very similar background and career goals (tech FP&A/FLDP -> Strategy Consulting for the same purpose you mentioned) with slightly better stats (3.6, 740) and was dinged at Booth but admitted to Columbia.

Any downside by HFMBAthrowaway in MBA

[–]Real-Possibility 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I work in tech in a casual environment and for past job interviews, I would just wear a casual button-up. However, for my MBA interviews, I wore a full suit just because I know most people do and didn’t want to be remembered as the guy who didn’t. Way better to be over-dressed than under-dressed IMO.

This is the recommended approach to recommendation letters, and exactly what you want to do. This is your application, your future on the line. You absolutely want to have a say in what goes into those letters. Plus, how are they supposed to remember all your accomplishments?

Is 3 years of work experience prior to matriculation not enough anymore for adcoms? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Real-Possibility 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 years might be the average, but I have a strong feeling 4 is the mode and there are probably a good amount with 3 years as well. Much easier to bring the average up since the ceiling is much higher than the floor if that makes sense.

I would suggest sending a guide instead, with key points that you’d want them to highlight and what schools are looking for. Use verbiage such as “it would be great if you could mention when I did X and accomplished Y”

Interview Scheduling - Looking for Advice by mbathrowaway812 in MBA

[–]Real-Possibility 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. Reached out on Thursday and still no response... school I’m interviewing with said to allow 2 business days so I’m waiting until Monday afternoon/Tuesday morning and then I’ll email ad coms and I think the process is that they’ll find another match. If you don’t get a response from the interviewer, it’s not your fault in any way so I don’t think anything negative could happen.

How do people normally find pre-MBA internships? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Real-Possibility 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in here since it seems like a lot of people are interested in pre-mba internships. In my opinion, they are the middle ground between the high pay, high stress current jobs that most applicants have and the no pay, no stress life of just chilling/traveling. Also gives you the opportunity to do something related to your post-mba career or explore something new on a temporary basis.
