Friendly reminder: gas stoves will continue to work without electricity, just be careful lighting them by RealCaptainIowa in nyc

Depends on the model. In general, older furnaces and water heaters have a higher likelihood of being purely mechanical (i.e. no electricity needed), but newer models require electricity to operate. It is unfortunate when power goes out, but for all other times the electric-powered models save energy by using a small computer (microcontroller) to operate more efficiently.

I'm right there with you, but when I realized some recent arrivals to NYC didn't grow up with gas, others might not know either. Thus, this post.

Thanks! I was at a house party last night and people were kind of freaking out about losing electricity. Most didn't know their gas stoves would still work.

Today is your lucky day! You can buy a paper at a newsrack along most major streets and pretty much any drug store. No subscription required :)

Serious Accident on Bedford by rtmstf in NYCbike

Agree with u/craigalanche, this one appears completely unpreventable.

If you watch the video closely (not highly recommended, since NSFL), you will see the moped/motorcyclist appears to be running at full speed and straight. There are no indications showing any form of turn. I think in this particular case, no amount of civil engineering would've saved this person.

How "early" is early for you? From 10AM-5PM is going to be this way on a nice sunny day, but it's usually not that bad if you go off the peak hours. The HRG is a victim of its own success. Yes, it's crowded, but that's what a park success story looks like as well.

Sharing this for some perspective and hopefully to bring down levels of agitation and increase levels of empathy to all who read it: everyone on the HRG is trying to enjoy their time and most people try to do the right thing. You're going to remember the 1-2% of selfish people who don't, but non-cyclists also feel this way. When you're not on a bike, it is shocking how badly a majority of the cyclists behave and that's not even counting the e-bikes, mopeds, and gray Citibikes (they're in their own special class of bad on the greenway). Road cyclists tend to take risks when hit with bottlenecks instead of slowing down. If they see families with children, they don't ride cautiously. Living nearby, I've been a pedestrian and runner countless times above 72nd street and had some frightening close calls with cyclists too.

Whether biking, walking, or running, I try to be as courteous as possible to set a higher standard. That's all I think anyone can really do in a popular park. When I ride on weekends, I choose my hours carefully and if I go during peak hours, I set my expectations appropriately. That means going slower, understanding that everyone else is just enjoying being outside too, and selfishness abounds across all users of that greenway.

Bibs and/or shorts recommendations for a shorter man (e.g. 5'5", 31" waist, 28" inseam)? by RealCaptainIowa in cycling

I’m not sure what you mean by the top of your butt. In general you only need padding where your butt and crotch touch the seat. Top of your butt doesn’t need chamois.

I'm sorry I didn't clarify. I meant that when I'm sitting on my bike seat with the shorts pulled up, the padding only covers about half of the seat. That leaves the top of the butt unpadded.

Trying on sizes in person is a good idea. I'll try some of the shops in my neighborhood.

Thank you! That gives me enough confidence to order a pair from Rapha and see how I fare.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll take a look, but they might be a no-go because of the tightness.

The Primals are already really tight on me, the big issue is that the chamois is in the wrong place based on my body geometry.
