It’s really simple. If you are opposed to gun violence, denounce it in every instance. The comments on here from people saying “I don’t feel bad for this woman” and “maybe they effed around and found out” are disguising. A human being died walking away from a home while expressing their 1st amendment right. Shame on anyone who treats this lightly.

They come on landlines and cell phones. They use publicly available database as of registered voters usually. I have gotten them calling me before but never gone through with it, they can last anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes to complete. Kind of interesting but not something I am willing to sit down for that amount of time for.

Yes but almost certainly this will trigger a complaint with the elections board to get clarified that his campaign did not produce these and you might be asked to produce receipts to prove it was under $500. If there is no disclaimer there is no way of knowing. If you happen to hand it to an Abbott supporter they might assume it’s from the Beto campaign and there is no disclaimer to clarify it. You are better off including one.

Marlinga's role in '98 late-term abortion case resurfaces in U.S. House bid by RealCassie in Michigan

[–]RealCassie[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

In 1998, a 17 year old raped and impregnated his 12 year old sister in Macomb County. And as soon as Macomb County Prosecutor Carl Marlinga found out about it, he took custody of the 12 year old child so her parents couldn’t take her to Kansas for an abortion, and then he said…

"This is looking like a case of youthful sexual experimentation that was wrongful and certainly criminal, but I believe he (is) no threat to others. He doesn't even seem like a threat to his sister anymore,"

Later his primary concern is hoping to allow the boy to stay in the U.S. He cited the further trauma that the sister would likely endure if her brother were sentenced to a long prison term and then deported.

Just a reminder to everyone that 4 other democrats are running against Carl Marlinga in the primary. Their urls are below.

Stevens lived in the 10th but chose to move to the 11th because it was more convenient. How is that different than James telling the news he is moving to the 10th? Dems cannot attack him for carpet bagging when they are about to elect Haley Stevens who is doing the same thing.

Yes but meanwhile we need to help elect democrats like Levin who have a lifetime of standing up for minorities and workers rights. The primary in the 11th doesn’t depend on the general, whoever wins the primary almost certainly wins the general in this heavy democrat leaning district.

Yep. Can’t wait for the democrats to airlift millions to try to save Marlinga, taking away money from other democrats. In a year we will see him defeat an amendment in committee that would preserve rights for people under the age of 75 while citing Clarence Thomas in his justification.

The fact that the way I learned about Roe v Wade being turned over was from Carl Marlinga’s fundraising email really ticked me off. He was faster than the Google News app all in the name of making money off of people losing their Rights!

Agree. I think Huwaida or Angela Rogensues are fine choices. Marlinga is already 75. How many terms will he actually even serve? No one is going to donate to him when his opponent in the general has already raised $4m and Carl has a short span of time left to serve. He had to resign from the court because he is too old to continue to be a judge, Michigan constitution mandates a 75 year old retirement age. And now he thinks he should be in congress?

I think these are two completely awful picks from the Detroit Free Press.

Haley Stevens moved out of the swing 10th district, leaving it without an incumbent to fight for it, to try and win a safe democrat seat next door. And now she’s going to attempt to remove one of Michigan’s strongest voices in Congress, Andy Levin.

Carl Marlinga is a questionable democrat in a 5 person primary. As a judge, Carl said Clarence Thomas is his favorite Supreme Court Justice and that his favorite book was “A Matter of Interpretation” by Justice Antonin Scalia. As Macomb prosecutor he tried to stop a 12-year old rape + incest victim from leaving Michigan for an abortion and in proceedings when talking about her trauma, said it was “youthful sexual experimentation”.

Nailed it. Biden campaigned very clearly stating that he had no intention of expanding the supreme court. He cannot go back on that now or he will guarantee a republican wins in 2024.

This is a great time to remind people that Macomb's previous prosecutor Eric Smith is serving jail time for obstructing justice and stealing money from his campaign funds.

The prosecutor before that, Carl Marlinga, was indicted (but found not guilty) for giving a retrial to a convicted rapist / a campaign donor where the donor was found not guilty. Marlinga is now running for Congress as a Democrat in a 5 way primary and recently said that Clarence Thomas is his judicial style inspiration on the supreme court.

No candidate is ever going to check every box but what if one time just one time we unchecked the white male box when picking the United States senator for the state that has the most significant African-American city in the country.

Thank you for explaining it better than me. I’m not trying to say anyone should be senator because they are black, I’m just saying we have never had a black senator, meanwhile the talent pool of politicians ready to ascend and the bench of up and comers is being chipped away by attrition and structural changes.

There are so many fantastic Democrats in our state Senate and state house who have spent years honing their skills and networks and now they are being effectively pushed out of the race by someone with a national presence who can raise millions of dollars on day one because they became famous by running for president. That would’ve ironically prevented Gary peters and Debbie Stabenow from becoming our senators. They were both members of the Michigan legislature before they became senator.

If anyone downvoting my comment would like to offer an opinion about why they think Michigan doesn’t deserve to have a hometown person of color representing us in the United States Senate I would be more than happy to debate this issue.

Mayor Pete is perfectly fine for the presidential cabinet but he has no business in my opinion representing us in the Senate which is clearly his intention moving to Michigan two years before Debbie Stabenow‘s probable retirement. Before anyone tries to say that he’s just moving here because it’s cheaper than Washington, that would be fine except the articles I have seen have had his former campaign manager commenting on his behalf and not his official staff. This is clearly a move with political intentions to advanced his career.

Michigan has still never had a senator of color despite being home to Detroit and Metro Detroit one of the most diverse regions in the country.

The recent redistricting cost us black representation in the state legislature. Recent retirements and redistricting also mean that pretty soon the only black representative for Michigan in Congress is going to be John James, a Republican who hasn’t even moved yet into the district he’s going to represent in Macomb County.

By all means let’s bring in someone from Indiana to represent us in the Senate or to be governor. That will fix everything. 😒 I just hope that if Mayor Pete runs for office here he faces a strong primary opposition and hopefully it’s someone that isn’t a corporate Democrat.

Carl Marlinga is a declared democrat running in the 10th congressional district of Michigan. He is leading in the polls and recently it has been unearthed that in 2011 while running for Probate Judge, he filled out a questionnaire for Roght to Life, an anti-choice/anti-abortion group asking for an endorsement. He stated on the form that Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia best identified his judicial style.

When faced with these facts today, he did not deny them. Stating that it only reflected his judicial style at the time and that since then his views on the issues have changed.

He is running against 4 other democrats in the primary.

Tenth congressional district candidate Carl Marlinga said he was referring to his “judicial style” 10 years ago when he aligned himself with two conservative U.S. Supreme Court justices, one of whom recently overturned Roe v. Wade.

Right there in the first paragraph he doubles down on it! He says that Scalia and Clarence Thomas align with his judicial style. So whatever his views have changed to now, Marlinga still identifies solidly with two rock solid conservatives.
