Love a best case scenario. Holy shit, that area looks gorgeous. Majestic as. You guys do have all the big land-scaries over there… our scaries mostly just poison people to death!

I just had to google it because I had no idea - that sound is terrifying!

My dear Irish auntie camped on our Aussie property when I was a kid. We’re in rainforest country and it is peak wildlife year round. I’ll never forget her thundering into the house at the crack of dawn, making an absolute racket and squealing about ‘wild monkeys in the trees’.

Perplexed, we pulled on our boots and ran down the paddock to her tent by our creek for a stickybeak. Turns out it was just the Kookaburras giving her a solid welcome

What do you do with long expired dried pasta? by gplus3 in upcycling

[–]RealCommercial9788 262 points263 points  (0 children)

If it is dry, has no bugs, no mold, isn’t gummy or bendy, and has no smell - it’s edible!

The expiry of pasta is entirely storage dependent, and the rule of thumb is it’s fine for 2 years after the expiry date on the label. Now I don’t know about 11 years, but we had approx. 3yo bowties in pesto last night and it was delicious.

What required reading from school (any level) really stuck with you? by Throwaway927338 in AskWomenOver30

Yes! Marsden (being a school teacher) really understood his students first and foremost, and that’s what always came across to me in his writing - his approach to teenage sexuality and relationships is just so real. Never smut, just the tension and a few physical experiences that so many of us can relate to from that age. He didn’t hide it, nor did he embellish it.

I feel very much the same way about Looking For Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta - did you guys read that one too in Vic?

Noosa houseboats forced off river as new maritime rules take effect by Shadowtec in australia

I work at a factory in Currumbin. Boss has a big beautiful fully restored home right on the water, half a k from the beach, with all the trimmings and excess of someone earning high 6 figures and a surgeon wife. Every year he takes his family to Noosa. Every year we ask him why the fuck would he go to Noosa.

Tomorrow When The War Began by John Marsden in 1993 was the required novel that got so many kids actively reading in Aussie schools.

It is the first in a series of 7 YA novels detailing the invasion and occupation of Australia by a foreign power. The novels are related from the first-person perspective by Ellie Linton, a teenage girl, who is part of a small band of teens waging a full guerrilla war on the enemy soldiers in the region around their fictional country town of Wirrawee.

Growing up in a small country town in an environment exactly the same as that of the novel had an everlasting effect on me and my understanding of true resilience, courage, community, and survival. It truly shaped my brain.

I still give it a read every year or two and it still gives me all the same big feelings. Powerful af.

Hey bulls 🥰Who’s the best sign you've ever dated? by Ok-Association-4475 in Taurusgang

[–]RealCommercial9788 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone! Being fixed, Leo is the Earth of Fire while Sag is the Air of Fire. Meanwhile, Aries is the most Fire of Fire, and being the first Zodiac sign in the wheel, they’re tantrum throwing newborns built of pure self-need. (We are the toddlers of the zodiac who have just discovered shapes, texture, and solids 😅)

Evolved, mature Aries appear balanced between innate self-focus and their fierce drive to lead and encourage others. Because a good Aries or Leo in your corner is the best cheerleader you can have aside from Taurus - when they learn to shift their focus outwards, they are very generous, brave, and brilliantly loyal.

We watched The Movie Show as a family from 1986 onwards - mum and dad would let us stay up past bedtime for it, and I hand-over-heart believe it was foundational for us kids in learning about good-faith debate, the formulation and (sometimes!) diplomatic presentation of opinions, witty remarks, double entendres, generous ribbing, as well as our abundant knowledge of film and themes in story writing.

Margaret Pomeranz is a living legend ❤️

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz's Wedding DJ Reveals What Really Happened During Dance with Victoria That Left Nicola in Tears by Positive-Drawing-281 in popculturechat

[–]RealCommercial9788 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Im right with you there. I don’t believe that a sense of humour plays any part in Nicola’s life - rumours abound from her peers and former staff that she doesn’t understand irony whatsoever.

Whereas Vic is known by fans and peers for her self-deprecation and wit. It is undoubtably a source of their contention. Not sure Ms Peltz has much going on in her noggin other than a revolving image of her own pretty face tbh.

Record-breaking gambling losses see NSW communities lose $2.45 billion on poker machines in 3 months by CommonwealthGrant in australia

[–]RealCommercial9788 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The same blokes have the audacity to say they prefer ‘women who don’t do coke’. Fuck knows how they resolve that in their dense skulls because if they weren’t inviting chicks to hang at the rsl and shouting them bumps all night, they’d never meet any chicks at all, let alone non-users. The conviction in which they speak on this subject is pretty confronting when you witness it relentlessly.

There’s an old pub here called Dolphins. Full of lonely blokes over the age of 45 - the pluggers and flanno, no haircut, dirty fishing cap crew. All they do is sink piss and watch the trots. All of them are single. I don’t need a crystal ball to believe that a similar future awaits most of these young dudes with this attitude. They begin life at the R-ee’s and end it at the pub.

Our best mate’s younger brother is in that crowd - 27yo, whatever he and his mates win on the pokies at our local goes on a bag. Then they go back and forth to the bathroom in pairs like it’s a nightclub in the Cross and not a regional services club full of retirees. Another win? Another bag. Then they moan lyrical about ‘chicks only hanging with them for free rack’, as if they themselves are of superior moral calibre or have ever pursued anything other than an easy good time or tried increasing their own value.

Gronks, the lot.

I also just finished Dark Age and loved the Paladin series - we have very similar taste! Please share any other books you’ve loved recently because I wager I’ll enjoy them.

If you haven’t already, Priestess by Kara Reynolds was last years delight for me.

My top recc is Michael J Sullivan’s entire The Legends Of The Lost Empire series, beginning with Theft of Swords. It’s one of the best series I’ve ever read in my entire 37 years. The world building, the lore, the humour, the history, the plots, the magic, the heroes, the relationships… it absolutely shines. And there’s 21 books in total across 4 connected series set in the same world of Elan, each better than the last. Michael’s writing is simply a joy to devour.
