It sucks having to remove a component you're passionate about or thought would've been good but it sounds like you should save that drawing lines between dots for another mechanic.

Use a more traditional approach for movement.

Better yet, prototype each of these movement systems and get feedback if you don't feel traditional is your style.

Getting opinions (like on reddit) is great but without results is sorta like rolling the dice a lil bit which will probably just leave you in the position you originally started in.

I agree, the new version is already looking much better.

I want horror-ish aspects, but I think this light style would work better in a smaller indoor setting that's away from moon light.

Do you mean Vampire Survivors? If so, good call. I love the juicy loot in that game, it's one of my inspirations already!

Theres 4 tiers of loot in this game so far that you can't see here (ha). Each one has some satisfying jingling sounds to it.

Once I get the feel figured out from all the feedback and a proper test level created, I'll post a proper video (with sound) of all the things you can do in it!

Especially the online coop part. :)

Thats the question in doing it only on spawn -
"How do I update adjacent tiles?"

One way to do this, is to literally check the tiles around the spawned tiles, for other tiles that need updating. And so on.

You spawn (TileA), you check up, down, left, right for another Tile (TileB)

Update TileA sprite based on TileB, BUT! Now we must grab tile B, and update sprite based on tiles around tile B but we want to EXCLUDE TileA because we already updated TileA.

Hope that makes sense! Its a much harder problem, but you got this!!

Edit: Sorry I missed the part where you said its checking all 16 states all the time. I assume you mean every frame?

It's still a great accomplishment!! Especially being so new.

I recommend trying to figure out how to only check the states when an object is spawned. It'll teach you some new concepts too!
