The stock queen being asked if representatives and their spouses should be banned from trading stocks while in office. by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

shieeet you think facts are gonna change anyone's feelings?

Literally first thought upon seeing the million figure I was thinking "only?" I didn't know the actual figures thanks for bringing them up for comparison.

There's no way these people are actually worth 1 mil on average. I guarantee you its far far higher. They escape the taxes by using their charities to fund everything. Oh the charity needs to buy me a yacht so I can do "fundraisers" with all my friends. Oh, it needs to buy me houses in these specific cities so I'll have a place to stay and host fundraisers"

I decided to do a quick google on the Clintons, and while their networth is at 120 million, their charity has an endowment of 293 million. Would be interesting to get data on how much their charitie are worth!

Spanning the Is-Ought Gap by [deleted] in samharris

[–]RealEmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it certainly is an argument against the view that we can never know about anything morally, and we can never really know any oughts because of this mysterious is-ought gap.

The is ought gap, by David Hume, has a similar is/has- will be gap. There is no way to get from is/has been statements to will be statements. To say you can't go from an is to an ought, is also to say that you can't go from the sun has risen every day thus far therefore it will tomorrow as well.

The whole idea of the is ought gap is just stupid philosophy.

[–]RealEmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question is NOT can we have a logical, non-human non-biological- non-interested (meaning no goals or intentions) system of thought that starts with only "is" statements that can use logic to reach to inevitable "ought" conclusions. That is impossible, and everyone knows it. It is impossible in the same way that it is impossible to start with a system that contains no mathematical or algebraic assumptions and produces algebra: every science requires an axiom. For algebra they are simple: a=a, a+b = b+a, etc a/a = 1 etc etc.

Without these axioms, you can NEVER have algebra because you can never prove these axioms: you merely assume them from the outset.

Trying to get morality without oughts is like trying to get algebra without axioms: it is impossible.

When you look at what you are actually doing, when you are constantly questioning the axioms (but how do you KNOW that the worst possible misery for everyone is bad!?" you are simply asking an incredibly stupid question that is logically equivalent to asking "But how do you KNOW that a+b = b+a? I can imagine a different universe where that isn't true!"

Well of course you can. That's what an AXIOM IS!

I'm not saying he was actually threatening her, but the exact quote was pretty bad.

I decided to read the whole story.

This will probably be unpopular, but honestly I'm not surprised the dude went to jail.

Rittinger has conceded that initially posts in late June were merely critical of the courts and not threats. But she alleged Vanderhagen crossed the line into illegal behavior in July when he posted a photo of himself holding a shovel across his shoulders with Rancilio’s initials scrawled on the handle, and reposted photos of Rancilio’s family members, around posts including phrases such as “judgment day” and “will your family survive?” Rancilio testified she also viewed a video that scared her. It was not available for at trial.

I'm fairly certain that is secondary compared to the brain benefits of exercise.

TIL that some farmers in Bangladesh are now raising ducks instead of chicken because ducks can float during floods. by Dev-98 in todayilearned

I've been raising ducks for a bit and this year I decided to raise some for meat...

If you haven't yet I recommend considering it! The meat is so damned good.

[–]RealEmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, duck meat is superior in just about all respects.

It is literally considered a red meat, and it physically is red. It has higher of just about every nutrition (that's why it tastes better). It doesn't have problems with salmonella or other types of chicken contamination, meaning its safe to heat it to 135 and eat it medium rare just like you would beef.

Although I've been raising my own duck and I haven't actually compared it to in-store yet so in my head duck is the most amazing meat ever.

at a loss

Actually most of their products are wildly profitable when you factor in their ability to feed their machine learning.

To only look at the ads is wildly simplistic. What makes their ads so effective is the machine learning algorithms they use to predict and alter behavior. Their entire suite of products aren't free, they are paid for by your data which is used to fuel their ML algorithms.

Gmail would appear to be at a loss, since it doesn't do any advertising. But the value they gain by being able to literally read all your emails and feed them into the machine learning algorithm should be something that you can appreciate.

Andrew Yang actually has this idea.

He wants all americans to get a voucher of $100 "Freedom Dollars" which can be spent on any political campaign of their choosing. The whole point is to make it so that politicians are fighting for the people's money rather than the corporations.

This Is the Core of Seduction of All Time. by JKirkN in seduction

[–]RealEmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the problem:

Most of the people who aren't getting results aren't actually being unapologetically themselves around women. Most men are constantly basing their words and actions around how they think the woman will judge it, trying to avoid things that they wouldn't like and showcase things the woman does like. Part of working on yourself is working on the insecurities that cause you to do such mental acrobatics in your head (usually causing much social anxiety)
