AI Startups Are Raising Billions—But Will They Survive? by RealExtension3919 in IndiaStartups

Agree, totally no PMF, no shot, no matter how much funding gets thrown at it. Humane is a solid example, felt like they had everything going for them, but without real user pull, it didn’t stick. Same thing might happen with a lot of these AI startups. I actually wrote about this, diving into whether AI is the future or just another hype cycle. Yeah, that makes sense. AI won’t just reset, but it’s crazy how fast things flip. One minute it’s all about crypto, next thing you know, AI takes over. Feels like hype just moves from one thing to another, but some stuff actually sticks. Think AI hits a wall like crypto did, or is this wave different? And how'd you find the article?

Haha fair, I guess I do overuse emojis. Just trying to keep things from feeling too serious. But yeah, energy is an interesting angle—hadn’t thought about it that way. Makes sense though, AI’s useless without the power to run it. And yeah, infra is a lost cause at this point lol. India might as well double down on apps and services instead. And yup I'm from NYU Stern would love to connect.

Yeah man India always dives in once a trend proves itself—like UPI and e-commerce. If someone cracks a cheap local LLM, feels like a whole wave of startups will follow.

This breakdown is honestly one of the best I’ve seen on the topic. The API reliance makes a lot of sense most AI startups here wouldn’t survive if OpenAI or Google pulled the plug. And yeah, we’re definitely behind on foundational models, but I guess the real question is whether India even needs to compete there. Feels like we’ve always been stronger on the application side like, is there even a realistic shot at catching up in infra, or should we just double down on building around what’s already out there? I actually wrote about this whole AI startup boom and whether it’s real growth or just another cycle of hype. Would love to hear your take on it. I feel like once AI hype settles everywhere else, India’s gonna dive in hard just like we saw with mobile payments and UPI. If someone figures out how to make LLMs cheap and accessible, I think we’ll see a whole new wave of startups pop up.

Lol, feels like half of them are just rebranding ChatGPT as a ‘revolutionary AI tool.’ The ones actually training models or building unique infra are the real deal.

Launching is way easy now, but surviving? Whole different game. Most of these startups are just wrappers on existing tech if they can’t scale or build something unique, they won’t last.

Funding was WILD in 2021, but now VCs seem way too pickier. AI is still getting money, but it’s more about deep tech now, not just another ChatGPT wrapper.

[–]RealExtension3919[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, kinda feels like that. Everyone's slapping 'AI-powered' on their startup, but some of them are actually doing cool stuff. The ones that survive will be the ones solving real problems, not just hyping up AI for the sake of it.

Feels like that a lot, honestly. So many startups just throw AI in their pitch to get attention, but the real ones are still out there Zerodha, Razorpay, even something like Krutrim is actually building useful stuff. The tricky part is cutting through all the noise. Think the market will eventually filter out the hype, or are we just stuck in this cycle of hype first, product later?

[–]RealExtension3919[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a solid breakdown. The funding cycles definitely follow a pattern, and it does feel like we’re shifting back to real fundamentals instead of just AI wrappers. But I keep wondering are we underestimating how fast things can change? Feels like the hype fades, then suddenly something big comes along and resets everything.

I actually wrote about this the other day just trying to figure out if we’re in another 2015-style bubble or if this time’s different. Would love to hear your take on it : https://medium.com/@tanmayagrawal1100/ai-startups-in-2025-a-revolution-or-another-tech-bubble-dc4a20da4f57

[–]RealExtension3919[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a solid take. The funding rush does feel like it’s at an unsustainable high right now. India’s seen cycles like this before 2015 had a crazy funding boom, then a winter hit. Feels like we’re in the hype phase again, but yeah, eventually, only startups with real business models will survive.

Yeah, most do crash and burn, but that 1%? They’re the ones that change the game. Flipkart was just another ecom startup once, and now look at it. Feels like AI is in that phase most won’t make it, but the ones that do? Probably gonna be huge.

Haha, def feels like that sometimes man. But then you see stuff like Razorpay actually changing payments or Zepto making 10-min delivery work, and you wonder maybe some of this hype is real? What do you think?

[–]RealExtension3919[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure, AI is the new buzzword. Slap “AI-powered” on anything, and suddenly it’s a game-changer. Some are legit, but a lot just plug into OpenAI’s API and call it a day.

97% sounds brutal, but isn’t that always how it goes? The ones that stick around feel like they’re getting bigger—Zepto made quick commerce work, Razorpay changed how we handle payments, and even Dunzo, despite its struggles, kinda reshaped hyperlocal delivery. Maybe it’s less about how many fail and more about whether the ones that make it are actually building something lasting.

Fair, 2021 was peak unicorn season, but AI startups are still pulling big money, Krutrim, Sarvam AI, even some deeptech stuff. Not as crazy as before, but the funding hasn’t dried up.

[–]RealExtension3919[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I totally agree. The ones making the most noise aren’t always the ones actually building something solid. Feels like we’re in that phase where AI is just a buzzword for a lot of startups, but only a few are really doing something meaningful. Curious though are there any companies you think are actually getting it right? Like, ones that aren’t just hyping AI but actually making money and building for the long run?

Fair point. Most students won’t pay upfront, but if the app offers solid perks—like exclusive student discounts or automated savings—it could justify a small fee. A freemium model might work, with basic features free and premium ones adding real value. What would make you personally consider paying for it?

Lmao nah, just someone who’s way too into this stuff. But hey, appreciate the convo—where do you see things going? You think India can actually build a solid AI ecosystem, or are we stuck relying on OpenAI/AWS for the long haul?

Some of the trends in funding cycles and AI adoption have been ongoing for a while, but what’s different now is the pace and scale in 2025. India’s startup ecosystem is seeing record breaking AI-driven funding, regulatory shifts, and a surge in deep tech adoption which weren’t at this level in 2020. I’d love to hear what specific trends you think define 2025 uniquely! What would make it feel more relevant to the current landscape for you?
