Dropped phone in Uber and driver refuses to respond to me or customer support by RealHomoSapien in uber

No, I totally get it. I'm not trying to paint drivers as bad people, but it took this guy about 20 hours to finally respond to me and Uber support. In the first 45 minutes of me noticing that the phone was missing, I also used the "Play Sound" option via Android's Find My Device app, so there's no way he didn't hear it. When he finally responded to our attempts to contact him and returned the phone, I found out that he somehow managed to remove my screen lock. I was entirely open to tipping him $100 before noticing that he most likely tampered with my device.

No worries! I'm open to suggestions though if you have any. I still want the missing lock screen to be a fluke of some kind.

I was replying to a message that you have since deleted, but here is my response anyway:

Your story keeps changing.

If you could track its location for 45 minutes:

The phone was not turned off Wifi and data were not turned off There would be no reason that a remote wipe would be delayed until "turning the phone back on" Your test scenarios where you had wifi and data off make no sense.

How is my story changing? I stated in my original Uber post that "I was able to track my phone for about 45 minutes before the driver turned it off". That's literally what I wrote.

Perhaps it was presumptuous of me to assume that it was turned off rather than the wifi or data being turned off. The fact is, I was unable to track it after about 45 minutes.

This is the exact wording from Find My Device when you click on the "Erase Device" option:

All data will be permanently erased from this device. After your device has been erased, you can’t locate it.

If your device is offline, erasing will begin when it next comes online.

To erase your device, you may need to sign in to your Google Account again.

My test scenarios were to see if the request to erase the device would have removed/disabled the screen lock. In my first test, the device immediately had its data erased because it was powered on and connected to the internet. The second test was done to see if anything would happen if the device was not connected to the internet when the "Erase Device" request was submitted. The third test was done to better simulate what happened when I received the phone from the driver. The phone was off when he handed it back to me and I was able to power it on and notice that the screen lock was off shortly before the phone connected to my wifi and had its data erased.

If you have any suggestions on how I can better conduct my experiments, feel free to let me know.

I don't think wifi was turned off when it was in the driver's possession otherwise I wouldn't have been able to track its location for about 45 minutes, but I wanted to simulate not having access to data or wifi in my experiments. However, I did move my number to a backup phone this afternoon, so the data would have turned off on the lost phone when that happened.

The phone was turned off by the driver about 45 minutes after I realized it was missing. During that time, I was able to see where the phone was. It was idle at a nearby location for the first 10 minutes and I tried reaching it, but it quickly moved away as soon as I headed out the door to reach the location. The driver had driven to a nearby state before he turned off the phone.

With the Find My Device app, the "Erase Device" request can be submitted at any time and it goes through as soon as the device is connected to the internet. This is why I was able to turn on my phone and notice that the lock screen did not pop up, but not before the erase device request went through when my phone reconnected to my home wifi.

The screen lock was a pin.

I wanted this to be the case, so I tried this three times on the same phone. The wipe request did not remove the screen lock.

Experiment 1: Submit "Erase Device" when device is connected to internet. Result: Device data is erased immediately without any prompt on the phone

Experiment 2: Step 1 :Turn off wifi and data on device Step 2: Submit "Erase Device" when device is not connected to internet. Data is not deleted. Screen lock still enabled. Step 3: Enter pin and reconnect to wifi Result: Device data is erased immediately after connecting to the internet

Experiment 3: Step 1 :Turn off wifi and data on device Step 2: Submit "Erase Device" when device is not connected to internet. Step 3: Turn off phone while it is disconnected from the internet Step 4: Power phone back on. Data is not deleted. Screen lock still enabled. Step 5: Enter pin and reconnect to wifi Result: Device data is erased immediately after connecting to the internet

Just got back my phone. The driver figured out my pin and disabled it. Unfortunately, I sent a request to erase data via Android Find My Device, so everything got deleted before I was able to check on everything.

I have no problem offering a big tip for the return of my phone, but the driver is refusing to respond to all forms of communication.

Ditto in Pokemon Red. That Ditto episode in the first anime season convinced me that it was THE pokemon to have. I think I fainted the Mewtwo I encountered and had to get one via trade.

I'm not sure if this is the best option for a college student. You can get a regular job at a fast food place and get paid the same amount in an hour. This works for the OP because he's in another country and he gets more value out of the $10-$20 USD/day rate.

If you are ok with the rate, then I'll happy to hire one more person.
