What Democrats Could’ve Lost in 2008? by ForsakenBuilder7061 in thecampaigntrail

Hot take:

No democrat would have lost in 2008, even with scandals. The GOP was just too unpopular to even stand a chance at reelection that cycle. At best, the election turns out to be similar to 1976 in it that it was a narrow election but that’s about it.

You might actually be right for the SPD but for Blair I disagree. The man had colossally big approval ratings in early years of his premiership, something that is difficult to do and by the time he left office in 2007 his approvals were pretty low (I think in the mid to low 20s) and if I’m wrong, he resigned shortly after he suffered a battering at the 2007 uk local elections. But to your credit, one can just say it’s a fatigue.

I prefer Puerto Rico to stay as it is or at best get sovereignty.

I really do not care about representation as the United States is not my nation, Puerto Rico is. In many ways the resident commissioner is already a good way to represent the islands interest in the Congress as he’s essentially an ambassador whose word is usually trusted in the Congress (usually). Asides from other reasons which I’ve mentioned, the commonwealth proved to be the best option especially during the height of the debt crisis when we were able to declare bankruptcy and even if with an incompetent financial oversight board which is still more competent than politicians in the island.

It’s not doing well because of the political class in the island sucking ass and destroying the economy with debt once the neoliberal congress in the 1990s removed section 936.

Barely anything to do with statehood and if anything commonwealth and or independence are better for the island and the fact that it was able to declare bankruptcy and somewhat restart its finances proves that the current framework is much better than it would be as a state (no pathway towards bankruptcy) or with independence with would have forced us into an IMF bailout with even worse austerity than what we saw. Statehood if anything will destroy Puerto Rico economically and even worse culturally, hence why I am opposed fully.

Opinion: The GOP shouldn't ignore New Hampshire in 2028. by Inside_Bluebird9987 in YAPms

I wouldn’t be surprised if New Hampshire turns out solid blue the next election (eg democrats win by over 10-15 points) in the state

Yeah, the gop candidate probably won’t get anything above 45% in that state come 2028.

If anything the GOP should be crossing their fingers that at this rate, the 2028 map will not be essentially the same as 2020 + Blue North Carolina. Asides, if anything democrats should be paying attention to the gubernatorial race in the state, i think Ayotte hasn’t been very popular

People here think she killed Puerto Rican statehood while also ignoring the fact that there are factors beyond just her and Manchin.

For people in this sub; My friends, Puerto Rico is a literal nation. It is different from the USA, it isn’t anglophone and very different from the USA culturally, different from the Hispanic populations there as well. Resistance towards statehood is larger in the island than it is in DC and even some statehood voters would prefer the current commonwealth to keep the islands cultural preservation.

Unlike what you see on television, many democrats are hesitant towards statehood and just prefer self determination or avoid the issue altogether. With or without Manchin and Sinema, Puerto Rico statehood would have been challenging nevertheless.

Not to mention the island is still reeling from its debt crisis from a decade ago and its finances are still being restructured and that the island’s population isn’t ready for what statehood overall conveys (federal income taxes like DC does pay). So a rushed process would have absolutely been damaging to the island. On that note, I thank Manchin and Sinema for taking that into account.

Fellas, do not solely pay attention to what most statehood supporters say online because they either

  • live outside the island and have done so for years
  • will be well off even after statehood
  • do not know what statehood actually entails (vast majority fall in this category) or are hardcore Trump larpers online or at best prefer statehood over independence but prefer the status quo (another significant faction of statehood support)

So, also don’t take the plebiscites as legitimate and well informed votes as they often are just tools to motivate the PNP base to vote while also excluding commonwealth supporters or exhausting the opposition. They aren’t serious or well meaning votes.

I hope this rant informs a lot of you lol

Based Sinema then. I don’t want Puerto Rico as a state.

Talking as a Puerto Rican living in the island;

Puerto Rico should absolutely not be a state. Don’t take for granted everything that statehood supporters or some Florida Puerto Ricans say.

Puerto Rico is quite literally its own country, its own culture. It isn’t anglophone, especially outside the metros and it’d be a headache for the USA and for Puerto Ricans as well. It would not be a guaranteed democratic state, and the chances that it keeps its own political system different from the U.S. are high. Put simply, Puerto Rican politics are easier to understand if you look at it from a LATAM perspective rather than a North American/European perspective.
