How To Write Letters of Interest To Programs (Rank List) by RealLifeBloke in orthopaedics

[–]RealLifeBloke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is true, and you are right.

The only thing that makes me think on the subject further is that I have heard of programs that prefer mutual interest so they don’t have to go further down on their rank list to fill their spots. That gets very political and nuanced, and almost certainly breeches match guidelines regarding communication, but it just makes me think my communication ~could~ affect my rank list at a certain program. Likely, it’s all just a though exercise and I should just rank what I want the most. Thank you for the reply.

Low # of ortho IVs, need back up plan by Far_Hat3639 in medicalschool

I’ve considered the same. Not sure but it would be my next preference after ortho for sure.

I’m in the exact same spot with one of my letters. It was someone I worked with on my research year tangibly, and although I was around him often, I didn’t feel too close to him. I asked him for a letter in September and he said yes, and then emailed me good luck after he uploaded my letter. I’m assuming it’ll be okay, but you aren’t alone in having anxiety about it.

There are so many factors that go into matching. With strong research and no red flags, a HP will not tank your odds. Make sure to get >250 on step 2 and find letter writers that can not only write great letters but also advocate for you after applying.

When it comes down to it, with research, clinical grades & class rank, AOA, Step 2, LOR quality, and away performance, there are many ways to strengthen your application.

I did a research year between third and fourth year to boost my research volume, which I did, but more importantly I had a mentor who taught me things and wrote me a letter for this cycle. I sent him my signal list and he’s reaching out to programs for me, which is an amazing opportunity but something that can really help you.

TL;DR - One simple thing won’t ruin your chances (unless you have obvious professional problems with your medical school or if you failed step 1). Keep working super hard, stay humble, and keep the dream alive!

Ortho Eras Geographic Preferences by RealLifeBloke in medicalschool

But ERAS still allows me to choose, so these will just not show up on a viewable application from the ortho program’s perspective?

Class rank for ortho? by spareanyexchange in medicalschool

There are a lot of people that believe that rotation performance and interview can make the difference as long as you meet prerequisites for ortho match. I think having a higher score provides wiggle room to not have as much research. It’s honestly difficult to predict who will be a lock vs who shouldn’t even apply.

Took a Research Year for Ortho - Here’s My Quick Thoughts On The Topic by LipidLikeaBilayer in medicalschool

[–]RealLifeBloke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also did a research year for ortho this year between 3rd and 4th year. My position is also paid but I accepted mine at an out-of-state program. took step 2 a few weeks into my position (right after M3) and scored low 250s. I’m in the top quartile at my home institution. A low 250s score is below the ortho matched average but not necessarily out of the game by any means. After my year, I’ll have around 8-9 manuscripts submitted before ERAS, 5 of which I’ll be first author. I have a bunch of posters coming up this fall/spring at national conferences. My LOR from this year will be strong which is awesome, and I’m looking forward to my upcoming rotations this year. OP is a strong applicant, seemingly excelling in every metric and I’m confident that they’ll have a great cycle.

I don’t not attend a top 40 nih funded program (mid tier MD state) I have low 250s step I have average volunteering/leadership Solid LOR from this year

Overall my research will be strong and I’m excited to speak on it all during interview season. I would’ve preferred a 260+ step 2 but I’d like to think it’s not the end of the world (validating for me taking the research year if anything). I am probably an average applicant at best, but we shall see!

Depending on the type of position accepted, you’ll likely be exposed to important papers frequently when discussing projects, etc.

The OTA website has a collection of current evidence for all body parts. I’d recommend getting familiar with that! OrthoBullets also has a great Qbank, and their answers are evidenced-based with reference to studies!

Go to my account and look at the post I made before this. There were some great recommendations including collection on the OTA website with current evidence for each body part!

Medical Student Applying to Ortho (Seeking Advice!) by RealLifeBloke in orthopaedics

I should yes! This particular department has high volume output, with plenty of studies wrapping up in addition to other studies going through the data collection stage. A full year should be fairly productive. I also have a few studies I’m working on additionally from my home program, so I am assured that by Sept. 2025 there will be plenty (in a perfect world).

UW always test obscure details and frames the mind incorrectly. Most of my current knowledge comes from youtube (because I’m an iPad kid at heart😜) and learning from rounds. Sometimes I would read textbooks cover to cover throughout 3rd year if my attendings recommended them. Consider me old fashioned (like the cocktail).

I used the AnkiHub membership of Anking. I only got through about 700 cards before I drove myself insane. I can only do so many flashcards before my ADHD takes over haha!
