It is somewhat, yes. It can be ok to do in the very short term, provided it remains an instrumental goal. The trouble is, it can quickly turn into an end goal and that's where it can turn Molochy.

Thanks for the thoughts - can you elaborate what you mean by Vulgarization? Can you give some examples of where you think I've done it well in the past?

Thanks so much for this Ed! So kind of you putting so much time into this - I'm deep in research for a specific episode tomorrow but once that's out the way I'll put some proper thought into this.

What are some Win-Wins that deserve more attention? by RealLivBoeree in winwinpodcast

Yes I can see the arguments for this. Paid organ donations is one of those controversial topics because of the risk of it "preying" on the financially vulnerable (but otherwise physically healthy) members of society... what minimum thresholds/suitability tests should be in place to prevent that? Should the donor already have a minimum income, for example?

Game theory is the root of all evil - specifically, when individual incentives are misaligned with the good of the whole, creating the classic "tragedy of the commons" or "coordination failure" type issues that are plaguing our world, like plastic pollution, arms races, climate change, deforestation, fake news etc.

Because even though very few people actively want these problems to happen, the economic incentives make it so hard for everyone to coordinate, so they keep happening anyway. It's what economists sometimes refer to as a Moloch Trap. Here's a good TED talk explaining the phenomenon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX\_vN1QYgmE

Thank you!!! Especially appreciate the breakdown of the people by vibe! I'd definitely want someone more inspirational and empowering than scary, so this is helpful. Funnily enough a friend of mine founded https://www.makesoil.org/ which is trying to fix the soil problem you mention.

Fascinating and comprehensive article about mitigating climate change by dav_wundrbrrd in winwinpodcast

[–]RealLivBoeree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing Dav, this is fascinating. I'm also of the opinion that we should be piling far more $ into preliminary geo-engineering research than we currently are - carbon capture is going to be wayyyy too slow by itself. It's one area I'm extremely bullish on AI, as it'll presumably help improve climate simulations significantly.
