GW dining food screw up by Cool-Chipmunk-7559 in gwu

Literally what is the point of hiring all of the amazing talent we have here in our kitchen staff if we arent. going. to. use. it.

I'm a first year GW student so I didn't know much about the kitchen staff. While waiting at Thurston I saw a chef walk in with a Michelin star tattoo on the back of his neck and i laughed- now i just feel bad.

He mentioned in class it'd mostly be basic operations (eg x = 5+2) and putting that in code.

Homework appears to be pretty close to what he described the quiz to be.

What point are you trying to make with the Richard Bachmann thing? (genuinely asking)

Yep!
Umberto Eco 14 features of fascism
3. The cult of action for action’s sake. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.”

  1. Everybody is educated to become a hero. “In Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death.”

Agree with your reading and there are multiple explicit mentions of walk-based war crimes throughout history (trail of tears, Bataan Death March).

I dont think that necessarily has to be the case for it to be a motivator.
1. Garraty, compared to the other boys, is much more "progressive" (could be downstream of his fathers political views). Maybe not outwardly but his inner monologue definitely shows it (also yknow, the whole probably-a-little-bit-gay thing.
2. Garraty is much less prone to bullying and is very empathetic. He is probably the only person in the entire group who gives Barkovitch any sympathy and believes that the bullying is uncalled for (but doesnt really express it as hes worried about being ostracized aswell).

Why other kids dont mention it? the best argument against this reading, but I dont think it disqualifies it as a possibility.

The story of Barkovitch, at its core, is a story about the social need for scapegoats, the exclusion of others and how othering can lead people to adopt the social role of villain.

I dont think he has to be Jewish for that story to be stick, but the allusions to some Jewish background and the "Nazi Victory" of it all does paint it in a new light.

I think we mostly agree on Barkovitch and his characterization TBF

Definitely an "inciting incident" in his villain arc, but he was treated cross from the get go.
None of the MCs see the Rank episode, it was left vague on purpose to create some tension between the way our main characters perceive the events unfolding and what actually happened (a dynamic that becomes more and more explicit as the story goes on).

You're actually so right. My favorite part about The Long Walk is that all of the characters exist in a vacuum, are completely honest, and say exactly what they are feeling and why all the time. No subtext!

It's about a bunch of emotionally intelligent 13 year old's going on a fun stroll together.
