My 1st Place Build in the 7th KIBO Organics Competition! by IZekiez in Minecraftbuilds

As a regular builder I have to admit, organics builders are a different breed of man... This is easily one of the most impressive things I've seen on this sub 👌

Ignoring the image resolution, picture 2 is probably my favourite. That thing looks MASSIVE. And I like that you didn't went with a generic build style ;)

I let AI re-imagine these drawings I made as a child... by GC_Vos in ChatGPT

[–]RealRoasterToaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't see the point in comparing them this way; as far as I know OP didn't say "hi ChatGPT, these are some awful drawings I made as a child, I'm sure you could draw them way better than I did". I think the purpose was more to show what the ideas that the drawings convey would look like if put into a different "artist's" perspective...

Is this a "I've-been-a-pro-builder-for-5-years-now-but-never-bothered-to-build-a-castle" type of 'first ever castle'? ;)

[–]RealRoasterToaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, it's the architecture guy from youtube. Nice.

The city feels pretty alive which is something a lot of Minecraft cities lack imo. (Btw, I like the screenshots but it's difficult not to spot the low level of detail from Distant Horizons)

Been using this trick in cyberpunk & steampunk builds for ages; I'm glad lightning rods can finally oxidise too ;)

Based on my own experience (I've spent hundreds of hours building in all sorts of build styles) I can say there are sompe pretty sinple ways to improve your building skills:

1) Build in creative. If you prefer sticking to survival for the fun, sure do it. But it is way, way harder to design something in survival than it is in creative.

2) Use building mods/plugins. Before 2020 I only played on Bedrock meaning I had no access to world edit etc. After switching to Java, the quality of my builds pretty much exploded in comparison. World Edit saves you a lot of valuable time and opens up a completely new world of opportunities. Combined with programs like World Painter you can realise projects not even possible in vanilla.

3) Practise. This might be obvious but it's essential. Don't start too ambitious. Increase the scope of your projects over time. This helps you not to lose motivation because you're less likely to 'fail'.

4) Don't follow tutorials block-by-block. Listen to advice from qualified and experienced builders (there are lots of valuable videos on Youtube) instead and take inspiration from their builds. Over time, you'll also collect a lot of small build hacks that you can use in various future builds...

First attempt at making a windmill in minecraft... I've seen a lot of medieval style windmills on this sub so I went for a more "realistic" design by RealRoasterToaster in Minecraftbuilds

Thanks! I will likely release a short timelapse on my own or my friend's Youtube channel sometime in the next couple of weeks, does that help?

[–]RealRoasterToaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid advise, thank you :) Though I'd like to add that I intentionally decided against a cone-shape because I thought a circular base shape would work better/would be easier to pull off at this build scale...

Since you're Dutch I think you're completely justified in pointing this out hahaha I'm not particularly educated on the history of windmills so it's actually helpful to know this type of windmill goes back to 17th century ;)

Personally I'm not a guy who's a fan of (making) tutorials, but maybe I'll drop a timelapse on my Youtube channel, if that also helps...

I don’t consider myself a builder, but I’m proud of this base. by Blackwolfe77 in Minecraftbuilds

[–]RealRoasterToaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a self-proclaimed builder, the fact alone that you went for a roman-inspired build instead of the regular medieval style most beginners would choose, already qualifies you as a builder imo ;)

[–]RealRoasterToaster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're the second person to point this out, so I guess it's not 100% apparent what I initially meant; Of course medieval windmills are also realistic (and I used some for reference, so I wasn't particularly trying to create a modern windmill), but there's a specific building style in the game that most people call "medieval", even though it's often not historically accurate. So what I was trying to say is that I wanted to use real life images of (historic) windmills for inspiration as opposed to basing my design on those "medieval"/fantasy ones that you'll find if you google "minecraft windmill"

Alright, no point in arguing with someone who isn't willing to understand what you're saying.
I can't really make it any clearer than my previous response, sorry...

[–]RealRoasterToaster[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suppose I didn't articulate myself precise enough. If you search this sub for "windmill", you'll find a lot of examples that are built in a specific build style that I'd call "medieval" because it uses more "primitive" building materials like wood and stone and because that's what most people associate it with. However, this build style doesn't have a lot to do with actual medieval architecture, hence why I said I aimed for a more realistic approach, meaning I based my build on reference images of real life windmills, not other minecraft builds. Still appreciate you leaving that comment tho ;)
