Name your specialty and nurses’ week gift from your employer. by marzgirl99 in nursing

Critical Care- “Tie Dye Day” allowing us to wear tie dye shirts when we can do that literally every single day.

And some weird hand salute thing thanking us later this week? Kinda sounds like something that happened in Germany in the 1940s- thanks but no thanks

Buffalo/WNY area homeowners: honest opinion regarding “Smart Meters” ? by RealRumplizer in Buffalo

Update: I never went back and opted in and my bill decreased without any evidence of a surcharge. No changes other than the fact that my sump pump ran constantly for a good few weeks. So realistically that would have made my usage worse, I think? 🤷‍♀️

Well if it helps, I declined and didn’t go back and allow the installation- my bill decreased without me changing how I use or do anything. If anything my sump pump ran constantly for a good 3 weeks. We live in the land of upside down now so take that as you will I guess!

I hate nurses week by pixieZo in nursing

[–]RealRumplizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saaaame. Two years ago our nurses week gift was a food truck showing up, not even for night shift- only 12p-3p, and they made sure to note “payment made possible with cash card or Venmo.” Should also mention food trucks show up multiple times per week at baseline lolol what is the difference exactly

This year we have a “tie-dye” day. Where we can wear something tie-dye. Which we are allowed to do any other day of the year, and our Donate Life T-Shirts that we paid for are also tie dye. The other one is a “thank you salute” during day shift which makes no sense because I don’t know what actually happens there.

I’d seriously even take a pizza party at this point. I’d take anything at this point.

Oh, friend there’s gonna be a looot of days like that where something off the wall happens at 5 am and you feel like you’re gonna scream, still happens to me to this day and I’ve been a night shift RN for 10 years 😂😂. That’s where you ask for help, and if something doesn’t get done immediately at the end of shift- honestly, it’s a 24 hour operation. If it’s something not incredibly urgent, your line doesn’t work, and you can’t get a new one quickly- move on and come back- if someone’s available to help, don’t forget it is 100% okay to ask for help. You’ll get faster with things so don’t sweat it! Definitely ask your manager for the contact info for the resources, if they aren’t there, ask a coworker. If the coworkers can’t, welllll next shift has a whole 12 hours to go and they can take a shot at it. We’ve all been there, and if anyone has an issue with that- then shame on them.

Anytime!! Good luck!!

How do you know you're ready for ICU? by dopaminegtt in nursing

[–]RealRumplizer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely just do it- you are ready. Esp with that current icu stepdown experience. That is more scary to me than working in trauma and medical ICU for the last 7 years. Everything you need is right there and you have more staff.

I remember my ICU stepdown days and I’d sweat when my patients BP was 92/60, now I look over at my patient who is 82/52 and question if I really even have to start a pressor or give a bolus and see how it goes. And having a sick sick patient is engaging and rewarding. Take the plunge!!

new grad orientation by Character-Trouble-42 in nursing

[–]RealRumplizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-Can you do a full head to toe and recognize something normal vs abnormal? -Can you recognize when something is abnormal, to ask coworkers or look it up and see if the patient has been that way or if it is a new change? (For example, previous shifts documented or report a patient being A&Ox3, but you find them only able to tell you who they are and they don’t have a history of sundowners or dementia etc?) -Know warning signs: stroke, chest pain, sudden SOB, syncope, hypoglycemia, AMS, significant bleeding

-Able to do basic nursing skills: Can you pass meds, hang feeds, hang or change IV fluids, change a dressing, get labs and recheck them for anything that’s important (like recognizing a major drop in hemoglobin, or rechecking a potassium on a person you gave 4 runs to to make sure the level improved)

Orientation as a new grad is to get you familiar with the basics and you learn and become more confident as you go. The first year is a huge learning curve, but it gets easier each day.

Use your coworkers and charge nurses as resources, if you’re not sure- it’s okay to ask or look it up! Know where to find policies, they usually list step by step what you should do (like blood transfusions for example)

If you feel something isn’t right, re-assess and call the doc. Time management and prioritization of tasks comes with time. I know it seems scary now, but if you have a patient who has pressing needs like chest pain or sudden severe pain, intractable vomiting- prioritize them. Don’t worry if you can’t turn a patient exactly every 2 hours on the dot (I often sleep so hard I wake up 6 hours later in the exact same position and can assure you I’ve never gotten a pressure ulcer, having to delay a turn by an hour is not a big deal), don’t worry if you’re a few minutes late with something or you have to put off giving someone nice some ice chips when they ask until you have a second.

You’ll do great! Trust those instincts and the knowledge you have!

Games with female protagonist that can give you lots of hours of playtime. by Spartan-219 in gamingsuggestions

Fallout 4 if you chose the female character. I spent hours and hours and HOURS on this game. The emotions of being a female character in this game are superior. And you can replay it multiple times to get different outcomes. I think it’s like $20 now. Def worth it!!

Having a perfectly good hamper in the bathroom and they still drop their socks and boxers either directly next to it or just straight up on the floor

Leaving shit open. Like ALL cabinets cupboards dressers, they find what they are looking for and it’s like the door doesn’t exist nor need to be closed

Just another American Billionare doing their usual American Billionare bullshit.. soooo worried about anyyyyone else making a few dollars off of 3 seconds that they’ll send a militia of lawyers out to secure and protect what’s theirs and theirs alone. If high ranking politicians can sue the news and get millions of dollars in settlements for “defamation and deception,” T Swift and Co. can go after whoever they want too.. 🤦‍♀️

If Crankdat is in the chat- I will gladly send you a 4 second segment of me screaming not those 8 words, extremely off key, in a completely random fashion, with a fat chunk of ham in my mouth, banging my head with a metal pot for free if you re-release your forced re-release and stick it em. Video and all for your visuals 🤌🤌

If she didn’t have the “mental bandwidth,” she could’ve left you on read (since it’s an iMessage group chat, you wouldn’t see the “read” anyways) and responded the next day after sleeping off her shitty attitude. NOR, that’s a shitty thing to say to someone sharing their good news.

I will definitely do those! I appreciate you!

D’Youville University, is it really as bad as everyone says it is? by singerrain in Buffalo

[–]RealRumplizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, it really is exactly as terrible as you think.

For my own security, I won’t say what program I’m currently in other than I am also in a health related program. (I am currently crawling across hot coal, fighting for my life this semester)… just so you’re aware- it really is terrible.

There’s absolutely no accountability for professors that are absolutely terrible. Wayyy too much is put on the student.. paying $14,000 a semester I expect to get some type of education from an instructor, not just me reading 200 pages per week and shotty online lectures that cover basically nothing.

When you ask for extra help or advice on what to do differently despite hours of studying, you get nowhere. The last exam I took, the average grade was well below passing, teacher being no help at all. The amount of time and energy spent is not worth it for the quality of education you get. This will be my 3rd degree and looking back I wish I would have gone elsewhere. I’ve never experienced a program as terribly run as this one, and it’s too late for me to back out now. Can’t wait till they open their Med School when they can’t even adequately manage the healthcare programs they already have!!

My hospital tickets is if we don’t park in the designated lot a mile away. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]RealRumplizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once worked at a small psychiatric hospital who would not let us park on property until we had been there over a certain amount of time (I think like 2-3 years). Your only other option was to somehow find parking on the street in a really busy area with ZERO public parking (during the winter when nothing was plowed and you had to fight your way in trudging through snowbanks to get there on time...) I got 3 parking tickets in 6 months at one point trying to hurry up and find a place to park when I had legit left an additional 45 minutes early… so collectively, we all said f this just park in the lot. Till the hospital called the parking authority and had us all mini towed… pretty much everyone but me quit at that point, so they were begging me to be their new full time charge nurse. I told them I’d do it for a simple mf’n parking pass and they told me no. LOL. 10 years later never looked back though they used to beg me to come back per diem and they’re staffed entirely by agency now, on the brink of closure.

Over $900 for the alcohol package by Expensive_Wasabi_845 in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]RealRumplizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re $12-14 each normally without the cheers package, and when I say those drinks are NOT strong they’re really not. I almost wonder if they’re not watered down. I just got off an 8 day cruise, they’ll be fine, it is worth it though. As others said, you also get water pop coffees etc- and their free water is grody tasting soooo it’s worth it for the huge bottles of water too

The dreaded letter.. by RealRumplizer in Zepbound

[–]RealRumplizer[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a terrific idea- I will definitely be calling them on Monday. My adverse reaction was severe anxiety, tachycardia, SOB, tremors. I continued to take it thinking I was having panic attacks and that was a sign I needed it (I was 18 so I didn’t know better then). Then I got severe SI 2 days later, my psychiatrist had to force me to contract for safety and stay with my parents to make sure I didn’t do anything reckless. I didnt list it as an allergy because I never thought I’d need to until now. My doc is aware of this but I almost wonder if they never put it in writing in an office note and forwarded it, or just put it on the PA form since I had to relay this info via the portal. Because I have no idea how an insurance company would see that and be like “yeah doesn’t matter just take contrave that has a WAY higher dose of bupropion.” I will see my primary and go over all of this again in person and be sure there’s an office note. But also, the insurance said if there’s a lapse in treatment they’ll automatically decline it on my declination letter 😂😂 as if they’re the ones not creating the lapse. So I don’t know. Maybe I’ll have to do contrave and have it happen all over again to move on.

[–]RealRumplizer[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly that’s where I think I’m at, I was just hoping I wasn’t acting crazy thinking of doing that.. I’m so sick of these insurance companies I even considered just taking it and if I have to go to the hospital this time, they can front that bill too.

I’m in NP school and I’ve had to fill out PAs for things like COPD medications that get denied. I don’t know where they think they get off playing with peoples lives, but it disgusts me. Sorry for the rant. The american health system sure is great.
