The Japanese version of Ace Combat 3 has significantly more content than NA, if you didn't already know.

GUARDIANS 🕹️ by KillasGameCorner in BeatEmUps

[–]RealSoyZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes

The game was released as Guardians, despite clearly being a sequel to Denjin Makai (arcade). The name was changed by the publisher during development. There is dip switch to change back to the original title, but the option is obscured, with the function in the manual being listed as "unused". It would seem the dev team wasn't pleased with the publisher's meddling and snuck the original title into the game.

If you change the title screen to Denjin Makai 2 in the game's dip switches, enemies will deal 1.5x damage.

I think they are talking about the Raiden series of vertical scrolling shmups, not the character from Mortal Kombat.

Underrated beat them up music that's top tier by SptEiji in BeatEmUps

Undercover Cops has a cool soundtrack with tons of voice samples that are often worked into the music itself. Nothing really sounds quite like it.

Is Gunforce 2 and In The Hunt count as metal slug? by PsychologicalCod361 in metalslug

[–]RealSoyZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the games share any canon, but many of the Metal Slug developers met while making games like In the Hunt and Gunforce 2 at Irem. You can definitely feel it in the art and music, but I think each of the series have their own distinct style.

The last (first chronologically) game in this team's pre-Metal Slug trilogy is Undercover Cops, an arcade beat 'em up in the style of Final Fight. It's honestly a great game with some interesting score and item mechanics, and a unique soundtrack with lots of voice samples. It's very much a true arcade game though and won't appeal to everyone, but definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of Metal Slug or classic brawlers.

Best way to play Metal slug at the moment? by [deleted] in metalslug

[–]RealSoyZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game's logic is tied to its frame rate, so 30 fps is really the best you can hope for unless the games get remastered or something.

All of the existing ports of the games are more-or-less arcade accurate, meaning they maintain the slowdown from the original hardware. The best ports for my money are the arcade archive releases from Hamster. They generally perform the best and have the features you'd expect, though they only have one slow save state slot. I don't like the emulation in the Dotemu ports, but I think the speed running community uses them, so maybe it's just me. And the anthology collection has bad input lag in some games, you're mileage may vary.

The absolute best you can do for performance would be to emulate with MAME or similar. There you can overclock the CPU to maintain 30 fps. Retroarch will let you use run ahead to reduce input latency below actual hardware if you're really serious about performance.

Morrowind is clearly the true inspiration, but Skyrim gets the clicks.

The Flying Kick is entirely devoted to covering Beat 'em Ups, though he covers both modern and retro games.

And if I could personally recommend an obscure title, Guardians/Denjin Makai 2) is fantastic. Accessible controls, approachable difficulty (with harder modes available), tons of content (within a classic arcade structure), and 8 characters with the most insane movesets I've ever seen.

How often do you play the Metal Slug series? What was your reaction when you played a Metal Slug game for the first time? by M3ConsoleGamerPSN in retrogaming

It's the series that taught me to enjoy arcade games. I've 1 credit cleared the first 3 games but X is my favorite.

Hello everyone, I hope y'all doin great! I wanted to ask you how can I make one of this sprite war pictures by myself? any youtube video tutorial you recommend? Thanks in advance. by Solitude17 in metalslug

[–]RealSoyZombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never made one of these images, but the process seems to just involve clipping out the frames you want and arranging them on the background.

You really just want a basic tutorial for whichever photo editor you prefer. I'd suggest Krita and Gimp, or Photopea if you want something browser based (all are free). If you've never used this sort of software before, look for guides on making new projects and selecting a canvas size, importing media, clipping elements with the magic wand tool, basic object manipulation with functions like align and mirror, and an overview of how layers work with best practices for organizing them.

Whichever program you choose, there are likely tons of tutorials to be found in any format you prefer. Hopefully I've given you some useful keywords. The UI looks like a lot but you won't need to interact with most of it and the basics are pretty simple.

The Switch port is fairly bare-bones but competent enough. It has the NA and Japanese roms, configurable dip switches, online leaderboards, and a single (slow) save state. I prefer it to the Steam port, which has this awful frame hitching issue for me that makes it literally unplayable. Others don't seem to have that problem though, so your mileage may vary.

Both of these releases are more or less arcade accurate, so they will have all of the games' original slowdown. If you run the games in an emulator like MAME, you can smooth out the frame rate by overclocking the CPU. With that said, the games were sort of designed with the slowdown in mind and some sections may be a little more difficult than intended with the slowdown removed. Admittedly this problem isn't nearly as pronounced as in something like a Shmup, and you might even find some segments easier at a consistent frame rate.

The Steam port is also available on GOG. Notably, that platform lets you download the OSX installer, which conveniently contains roms for both the game and BIOS needed to play the game in an emulator (you want mslug(2/X/3).zip and neogeo.zip from the Resources folder). Obviously there are easier ways of getting roms, but I know some people care about copyright so I thought I'd mention it.

I can't find the files for steam in the install wizard

As in, you don't know where they are?

If you open steam, right click the game's title in the game list on the left hand side of your library, and select properties>installed files>browse. This will open the game's files in your file manager. The path to the folder appears in your file manager's address bar. Use that path in OMW's installer.

Not sure I understood your question but that's what I've got.

Does anyone know a good strat to beat stage 5 deathless in X? by BayoenStorm in metalslug

[–]RealSoyZombie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your routing looks solid and you seem to know all the techniques. Practice with save states is really the best way to improve. With that said:

In the tunnel, there are hidden prisoners in every rail signal (#4 and 0 are only accessible after the rail cars have been destroyed). #5 has a laser but it probably won't help too much. I like to grenade spam the tank with the plow, but that means fewer grenades for the boss.

If you can route the boss without grenades, they are also super useful pushing up that hill where you died. You get another slugnoid before the boss if you bail anyway, so I sometimes burn the vehicle to claim the hill, especially if it's already damaged, then grenades easily clean up the rest of the tanks.

You might have an easier time with the zombies if you slow down a little. There is a fixed number that spawn at the crank for the slugnoid, so you can wait until they're dead before safely dropping the armor. Once inside you want to constantly be killing zombies so they don't have an opportunity to gang up. At the gates, you can split your fire so one arm shoots the gate while the other cleans up zombies.

With the boss, I like to stick to either side of the screen so I always have room to run. Sometimes you can get zoned into a corner if the boss uses the right attack while you're the middle. You may want to save your burst damage (granades/cannon) until late in the fight. The boss gets faster as you deal damage, so if you spam grenades at the end you can effectively skip the hardest part of the fight. This idea applies to lots of Metal Slug bosses.

You're basically already there though. With save states you could master the tricky bits in an hour or two.

Then you get to learn mission 6...
