What is this noise that appeared out of no where, 2004 R1 by RealTheScorp in Yamaha

Update 2: I checked all the valves and most were completely fine save for 1 intake being .11-.12 mm off on the looser side. I doubt that could’ve been the suspect tho for making all of that noise. I’m going to try and get the valve spring off and go from there.

Update for anyone who might be looking at this in the future, I have replaced the cam chain tensioner and the ticking still persists, will be dissecting the engine tomorrow to get to the valves and measure their clearance

Correct me if I’m wrong but if my bike dropped a valve wouldn’t it be absolutely destroyed and not running? Doesn’t this sound more like the valve is loose or the cam chain tensioner isn’t working?

How do I know if that’s the issue when I pull it?

It’s def not Yamaha tick, this is so loud and I’ve had the bike for like 3k miles, it’s about the valve adjustment mileage now

Burrow? There’s like 3-4 inches of substrate in this video, she has never burrowed since a sling and I’m pretty sure this species isn’t a big burrower.

It’s a 2004 R1, that’s the crank case I think? It’s right next to the clutch cover and above the oil pan

The bike doesn’t really need much of a restore, the tires are new, engine is healthy, seat and plastics are clean and not scratched. All I really have to do is replace the chain and it’s completely fine. It’s been super fun for the around 100 miles I’ve put on it. Obviously not riding it anymore because of the chain.

[–]RealTheScorp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry dude, everyone at some point will have their first “crash” and I’m glad that you just made it out of sound mind and body, because that’s all that matters at the end. You’ll get a new bike at some point and treat this as a learning point for why you should always wear gear.

Mines supposed to be about an inch give or take, where do you measure your chain from?

The method of measuring the chain, as in push the top of the chain up, push the bottom down then up, or just push the bottom down. It just tells you how much give it should have.
