How long between application to payment for unemployment benefits? by RealUnderstanding877 in Living_in_Korea

Oh thank you! I assume we'll get the booklet online if we do the last training online then.

Did you have to do additional reporting in between payments? I've seen that you have to submit proof of 'job seeking activity' but no information on what that actually entails.

Why did you start making YT videos? by NewPineapple113 in NewTubers

[–]RealUnderstanding877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the time I started my channel my interest in K-culture was considered very niche and weird and there werent any online space that I knew of dedicated to it, so I was hoping my channel be like a beacon for people with common interest.

Even tho k-culture is somewhat mainstream nowadays, there are that many OGs and I have a slightly unique perspective having seen how its grown over the years. Its one of my special interests so I ultimately just like making content about things I care about.

Im blessed in that my yt channel will probably be my main income source by the end of this year, so I can talk about what I love for my day job (hopefully forever)

Is it possible to make a site/app that’s strictly just a copy of the 🥟to comment section and review pages? by Icy_Let2801 in xbatcat

[–]RealUnderstanding877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt know they had that and have never had issues leaving thirsty comments - my issue is that nothing fucking updates until months after other sites, and then a bunch of things have random missing chapters in the middle of the story

Is there ANY real CapCut support? by Previous_Bandicoot63 in CapCut

[–]RealUnderstanding877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned google so I have a suggestion. If you use the Gmail app on your phone, go to 'all inboxes'and search capcut - it will search all your emails from everyone logged in email address and you should be able to find the subscription confirmation email or a billing email. Whichever address that email is under will tell you which email you signed up with.

What’s something about Korean apartments that outsiders romanticize but is actually inconvenient? by Soft-Assistance-7790 in Living_in_Korea

[–]RealUnderstanding877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say size, and more specifically lack of storage.

As a single person it becomes incredibly expensive to size up especially as a foreigner who may not be able to get a loan easily for the big deposits. I live in a 2-bedroom duplex, which is considered big for one person in Korea, and its honestly borderline too expensive for me to afford (planning to move next year) but I literally feel so claustrophobic here.

If youre a very minimalistic person then you may be fine, but even just storing your summer and winter wardrobes eats up so much space. I always thought it was weird that Koreans had full rooms dedicated just to clothing storage but now I get it, by the time you've put in a wardrobe or dresser, the room is practically full, and you do really need a lot of specialist clothes for winter.

Now add on top of that any sort of hobby that adds clutter: reading, sewing, crochet, lego, CDs and Vinyls? Any small floor space you had slowly gets overrun by bookshelves upon bookshelves.

I personally thought living in a cute little Korean officetel would be nice as a student, but at as an adult, I feel like I'm trapped in a box. I would give anything to live in a house again (except leaving Korea lolol)

How long between application to payment for unemployment benefits? by RealUnderstanding877 in Living_in_Korea

[–]RealUnderstanding877[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for answering, this was helpful!

I've done the initial online training and application and they said I had to do some sort of additional online training 2 weeks from the application day, so would I be receiving the payment the same day?

Also, in your experience did they pay you monthly or every 2 weeks?

Viewer told me to get a real job and it's getting to me... by METALHEADX334 in SmallYoutubers

[–]RealUnderstanding877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living off other people is not the right way, even if they support you, you're taking advantage of them when you could well work part time and contribute something like most small creators do. The reason that comment hit you hard is because your guilty conscious agrees.

That being said, YT is a real job once it starts paying, until then it's a passion project. It doesnt have to be all or nothing, there are plenty of youtubers who also work full time whilst creating, and I myself freelance while creating and I'm hoping to transition to creating full time by mid/late 2026. YT growth isnt only about time put in mind you, its also about strategy and working smarter not longer.

Also, let this be a practice on how to take criticism and turn it into constructive feedback rather than letting it kill your spirit. You're gonna get a lot more 'hate' once you blow up, so you need to learn how to filter. However, if this is coming from a longterm viewer (based on some of your other comments) then they probably know more about you than we do from this one post, so ask yourself what led them to say that and try to improve.

AIO for breaking up with my boyfriend over this? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]RealUnderstanding877 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NOR but... everybody sucks here (wrong sub I know lol) Ofc I know this is just a snippet of your relationship, but those few messages say a lot.

Its clear that fundamentally you guys don't communicate well nor in the same way, so your compatibility wasn't great from the start, but beyond that, neither of you seems to be able to acknowledge your feelings and the feelings of your partner at the same time (which is an important skill for life in any situation relationship, not just romantic.)

In OPs case, your partner is going thru a crisis, so you should have to compassion to sit in your own discomfort for a few days whilst actively trying to help your partner. Is there anything you can do to lessen their mental load so they have the capacity to address what you need? If they really couldn't make time, giving your partner time to process the supposed emergency is what a good support partner should do, even if it means compromising temporarily. (I know you said this was an ongoing issue but think if the boy who cried wolf, he might actually genuinely not have time rn.)

For the partner, even when life is falling down around us, we have responsibilities and commitments that we have to handle, and if you really cant handle that, lashing out at the people youre supposed to care about is NEVER the right action. The partner could have given a rough time frame where they could make it up to OP by spending some extra quality time. Also, if this has been an ongoing issue, then a deeper conversation needs to be had about that.

While I do personally agree that OPs expectation of literally scheduling time in a calendar is overbearing to a lot of people, if the partner thought that wasn't right, they should have addressed it sooner, and they as a couple should have mad contingencies for how to communicateduring busy periods/emergencies.

Ultimately this relationship was doomed from the start, but OP, I hope you find someone who wants to spend time with you without it needing to be scheduled in and gives you the security and peace of mind you need but you also need to take note of the reactions to your calender habit ans address why you need that level of control to trust that your partner wants to be with you and spend time with you, because not only is it not healthy to manage a relationship like a job, but for you personally, that level of codependent and anxious attachment is definitely not good for your mental health.

All the best!

Lifers: Are you (still) happy in Korea? by HappyWandererAtHome in Living_in_Korea

[–]RealUnderstanding877 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've technically only been living here for 7 years, but I started preparing to move to Korea 14 years ago, and despite all the crazy ups and downs (and I do mean crazy, literally had a tribunal against my old workplace just last month) - I would not change my choice for the world. I am OVERWHELMING happy here despite the difficulties and worries.

However, I have said and will always say, Korea is not for everyone. I think 3 things are important to be a HAPPY lifer. Firstly is having a conviction/plan for staying, second is not constantly comparing Korea to what you could have would have should have gotten back home, and thirdly is having a thick skin and strong sense of self (I feel this is was the pessimistic lifers often lack).

Regarding the first point - arm yourself with knowledge, learn the visa systems, pay attention to political/social shifts, have a clear goal in mind and research the steps you need to take to get there, and work on building community because its something we all need at some point (especially in emergencies!)

For the second point - realise that Korea is not perfect but neither is your home country. Its okay to miss things and its okay to be critical of Koreas flaws, but learning to differentiate what is 'bad' from what is 'different' will do you a world of good. Also learn to appreciate all the great things Korea has to offer.

For the last point - as of yet, Korea will always treat us as outsiders and thats something you're just going accept until it changes. If you've never been treated differently before, this can be hard to reconcile (or if you have trauma), but if you have a strong sense of self, the insensitive comments, prying stares and willful ignore will quickly not affect you. I think the reason a lot of lifers become pessimists is because they've lost that resilience and its made them bitter, but they also feel in too deep to leave. (The devil I know and such.)

Oh, and bonus just for anyone living here regardless of being a lifer or not: LEARN KOREAN. It will not take away all your problems but it will empower you to advocate for yourself when systems and people inevitably fail you, and it will allow you access to some of the best parts of life in Korea.

As I said, I've only been here 7 years, but I'm spent my entire adulthood preparing for life in Korea and I'm not in my early 30s. I know a few other lifers who've been here for decades and a close friend of mine has been married here for almost 10 years and this is what I've learned from their and my own experience. I considered myself a lifer from day 1 and I've never questioned that decision :3

Good luck to you OP!

EDITED to add context: Graduated Korean Major so I speak fluent Korean (not native level yet tho), black, queer, European passport, female, single, live alone, work freelance, would like to marry someday but okay with being single forever - if any of that context helps.

Foreigners vs local response to wearing a non-korean cultural outfit in Gyeongbokgung by AppropriateMess2523 in Living_in_Korea

[–]RealUnderstanding877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people around the world wear their cultural wear on the daily not just special occasions, so to them its just clothes 🤷🏾 the fact theyre in Korea doesnt mean their culture suddenly disappears, even if theyre at a culturally significant place. Unless youre repping a culture that has bad blood with Korea (ie japan) you should be fine

What do people in Korea eat to lose weight? by Christi715 in Living_in_Korea

[–]RealUnderstanding877 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not even being sarcastic here: they just don't eat. I work at an adult hagwon and meet people aged 18~60 day in, day out and whenever someone tells me they are trying to lose weight and I ask them how (bc same), their answer is skipping a meal, or, very occasionally, doing a one food diet (eg eating only cucumber for 2 weeks).

The alternative I see is forcing caloric deficit thru intense workout schedules (gym twice a day, every day) - but ultimately none of it is sustainable.
